Have a question, get 01 z06 with 13k miles for 30k or 02 with 3k miles for 36.5k? Offer your opinions on the price and the fact that the 01's drink a little (alot) of oil. Both are QS with red inserts.
My 01 doesn't drink oil and has proven powerful, reliable, and fun. Given that, the real decision, for me, is simply "More Horsepower for More Money or Less Horsepower for Less Money." (gee, doesn't that sound a lot like the same kind of decision we have to make on our mods? ) Are the 20 additional ponies worth the money?
I had the same decision back in April. I chose to go with the '01 for 5k less. I'm modding the car anyway so I didn't care about the minor changes on the '02. My only problem is the oil burning and that'll get fixed this winter under warranty. The previous owner babied the car so he didn't see any consumption. I drive this thing so it's eating oil, but runs like hell. All '01s have the lower tension #2 ring so if you push them they'll burn some oil. Some Z's (all years) have a bad valley cover and really eat a lot of oil... like 1quart every 500 miles. Good luck
There is a lot more than just 20 HP dif. "405"hp even though just 20 hp more, means a lot more come resale. Also, for me, I was not interested in the 01 as it was just 35 more Hp than the Vert and they had no HUD, when the 02's came out with the magic "405" and the HUD, I was all over it. Just my .02
I've been trying to get a 02 QS with red inserts for 2 months. The best deals have been 19k miles for 36k and 3k miles for 38.5k. If Icould get the 3k miles one for 36.5k I would jump all over it. Out of state vehicles are a tough call, I like to put my hands on them.

Keep in mind also that there is more than just a 20 hp difference. I don't know them all, but it includes shocks, brakes, converters. If you are not planning to mod the car at all, then you may prefer an 02. However, if you are willing and able to mod the car, then I think you could spend less than the 6.5k price differential and more than make up the performance difference between an 01 and 02.
Go with the 02. People who have the 01 oil burners and keep saying its no big deal and i will just keep adding oil need to think more beyond that. When the engine burns the oil, you need to ask where does it go?? Well, it goes out the exhaust which will eventually clog or shorten the life of all 4 oxygen sensors and also clog the cats. It will also eventually carbon up the spark plugs, the top of the pistons, and perhaps the valves as well.

Get the 02. I test drove both and you can feel the difference the extra 20 horsepower makes. Also the 02 has a better ride than the 01. I believed they changed the rear shocks on the 02. If you plan on autocrossing either, aussming equal driving skill the 02 will beat the 01 and unfortunately they are both in the same class.
The 02 will have a superior resale value than the 01 down the road. I know a few 01 owners who sold their Z06 to buy the 02.
In the end the choice is yours so buy what's best for you. I had the same choice two months ago and in my mind it was easy, pay a little more for an 02.
No question about it.
02 is the way to go.
Not that the 01 is not good but they really did alot of changes for 02.
I was looking for an 02 but ended up with a grat deal on an 03. :D
