You need to read more about the design of the Z06. The body was chosen because it is both the lightest and strongest of the three Corvette designs. That makes it possible to achieve the best acceleration, handling and compliance with the additional torque and horsepower in the Z06. The Convertable is the heaviest and weakest frame design. Sorry, but the engineers at GM do know what they're doing! It's just basic physics. I for one think it is a great concept. I wish they would limit production more so they don't become a dime a dozen.
Hmmm...porsche made a 911 turbo cabrio this year.......360 modena cabriolet.....there are more drop tops that are faster than a z06. If you wanted a track car buy an 99FRC and mod the crap outta it. Basically, the fast cars (porsche, ferrari etc.) have more luxury and are better built than a GM car. The z06 was great for GM because they used the FRC platform (which didn't sell well...and what better way to put mods into a FRC and call it a z06 and make a big profit doing it). Basically, GM lounges around the corvette....once they have made the car.....you cannot expect them to adhere to customer wants even if they did jack up the price for a z06 vert.
Yea but . how much money are you going to pay for one of thoes "faster verts" ou speak of ? These cars cost double the Z06. Are they twice as fast ? I'd hope so for that kinda money.
Not a flame, just dollar for dollar you cant touch the Z06.
Because it ruines the idea behind the Z06. I'm glad they don't make a vert Z06.
Z49
:iagree: Whether you agree with the premise or not, the Z06 is meant by GM to be a streetable track car and I think they deliver on that quite well. Many of us like the idea of getting this kind of performance out of the box and not having to mod the hell out of the car. If someone really wanted a vert with Z06-like performance, then why not by a vert and mod the hell out of it? No flames intended, just an alternate opinion.
maybe
or maybe because the hardtop c5 wasn't selling so they had to find a use for it.
the coupe shape is aerodynamically superior and might make a better road race chassis ultimately because of it.
the hardtop is ideal for autocrossing though for sure, where weight matters more than high speed aerodynamics.

Personally I like what the Z06 is and what it was made for. If you want a supe fast vert go get a '98 and make it into whatever you want.
Now as for the vert frame being the heaviest and most flexible.... this is almost negligible, it'snot weak at all. I think the Z has a 24hz rating and the vert a 21hz where most verts are like 8-12hz  . The Corvette convertible is one of the best made in terms of chassis stiffness and weight; it's actually 5 pounds lighter than the coupe. Unlike most other cars that are made into verts, the c5 chassis was already plenty stiff and didn't need any extra reinforcement to compensate for having no roof. Now compare this to my old cobra vert... it weighed in at 3500 pounds where as a coupe was 3350. Basically a vert can handle everything you can throw at it and will make an amazing track car too.
Rolling down the back straight at Road Atlanta last summer in my parents vert at 130 w/ the top down is a pretty cool feeling
Oh yeah, modenas are gorgeous cars... but faster than a Z.... nope. I 911 TT w/ x50 is.
Anyone can get 405HP out of a convertible if they want, why does GM always have to do it? I don't think they would have sold that well even if they did make it, defeats the purpose of the car. Just my 2 cents...
I agree with your point that perhaps GM wanted to juice up the sales of the hardtop model. So what? The model does fit the concept best. Could they build a faster vert than the current model? Of course, but then that would not be faster than a Z06 with the same parts because of weight. I think it's hard to argue with the three choices GM currently provides, especially at the price. Yes there are some really nice, fast convertables out there, but nothing at the Z06's price. I personally have owned three vettes over the past thirty-eight years. I keep them stock and enjoy the performance for what it is. The Z06 is the best to date, by far. If other vette fans want to modify the car for enjoyment, that's fine too. I like mine stock.
