I have seen a lot of posts and even know a few people who have had great sucess with intake mods such as filters, air bridge, and thermostat. What about the MAF meter and the throttle body? I see a trend of completing the following and "entry level" mods: 1) HiPo filter/air bridge/thermo and controler (about $1k), 2) headers, exhaust, and X-pipe (about $2k).
But what about the other parts such as underdrive pulleys, Hi-flow cats (to complete the exhaust system), HiPo MAF meter, aftermarket throttle body (I haven't seen any, but they must be out there). Are there people out there with these combinations or are the $/benefit to small to bother. I always figured every little bit helped and should focus on airway restriction (both in and out). Might even stretch to the intake manifold as a possible improvement, but then again, getting close to getting "into the engine", which is not my goal ---- yet.
Most people here have changed out the factory intake which is a good way to pick up 10-15 horsepower depending on the set up. I would steer clear of the MAF. The high dollar units are not worth the trouble. The OEM unit will adjust fine to the change in air flow if you modify the filter, air bridge, coupler etc. I would also leave the throttle body alone if you are only planning on simple bolt on mods.
The pulleys are a waste of money IMO. You can free up some additional power more easily by keeping the engine cooler and using a lower T-stat w/ a fan controller.
All the other things you mentioned are very common mods that can produce substantial power increases, especially long tube headers, high flow cats, and a nice cat back system.
The above is just my .02, so take it for what it's worth!
