I recently had an oil change done in my 01 Z06, dealer used Mobil Synthetic 5W30 and stock filter. Almost immediately after the change the engine started making slight knocking sounds, kind of tic, tic, tic sounds that increase as RPM’s increase. It does this at all temperatures. I had the car for a couple of months know, only drive it on Vette days so I’m not really sure if the noise really started after the oil change. I just noticed it than. If you’re familiar with the older beamer in line sixes they had a slight valve clatter. This sounds a bit like that. Any thoughts??
Hard to tell without hearing it, but could be lifter noise. Just had a service bullitin accomplished on my '02 Z for lifter noise. Basically the lifters, which are hydraulic (use engine oil) were getting airated oil due to bad seals on the oil pick-up. Tapping lifters can also be caused by using the wrong weight oil...some engines are more sensitive to this than others. Doing another oil change might be an inexpensive way to trouble shoot. Or check to see if you have the same service bullitin on the '01s.
I’d swear I never heard it until I had the oil change. I was going to do a new one and use 10W30 this time, just wanted to get some thought from other Z’s out there.
I spoke to a tech down at Bowling Green and basically he said 10W30 was the way to go. The 5W30 is recommended for fuel efficiency by GM. I’ll give 10W30 a shot
A bad oil filter can cause engine noise (low oil pressue).
What is your oil pressure?
What is the dipstick oil level?
How many miles was the car driven on the last oil change interval?
Can you record the noise?
I just bought the car about three months ago, the oil was still pretty fresh but I had it changes, just so that I would know its good. The oil pressure looked normal the last time I drove and the level is right on. Since the car runs great other than the noize I though it might be the piston slap I heard was common to lots of Z's. I'll swing by the dealer and have them check it out.
It gets pretty cold at times, but I dont drive it unless the weather is good. During the winter it will sit in a heated garage so I should be good with the 10W30

Ohh boy, here we go. It is not common on "alot" of Z's. Hope you get your problem solved.
First of all a higher performance engint w/ a cam like this one has is going to make lots of valve-train noise. My car sounds like a quiet sewing maching when cruising around and it bugged me at first until I did some research... it's just normal noise. Now something louder or a distinct change is a sign of something.
From what I understand 5w30 and 10w30 are only different in cold conditions when the engine isn't up to temp. Once warm they're both 30w oils and are effectively the same.
Yeah,
From looking at similar subjects in the forum I noticed there are some divided opinions of this. Some will say its common, some not. I'll deffinitley take it to the dealer, I'd prefer to take it to a tuning shop, to get an NON GM opinion.
Any one know of a good one in the DC area?
Actually take it to Koons Chevy... they're in Tysons off of leesburg pike. They are the largest volume vette dealer in the area and know their stuff well. This is a GM lsx motor specific characteristic and would best be understood by a GM mechanic (should be  ) If you took it to a specialty shop then you're going to have to try to explain it to them and they'll most likely just say something's broke. If you were talking about vette tuners...I don't think there's any big vette tuners in the DC area. Good luck
I went to the dealer, had the shop forman burry his head in the engine and according to his profesional opinion all is well. I'll get the engine recorded and post it, see what you guys think :banghead:
I have similar engine noise in my '02 Z06 that I initially found disturbing. However many on this forum seem to have it as well. Given this, a few months time, and examination by 2 dealerships with no problems found, I'm getting OK with it.
On your recording the noise, I've found it to be most audible around or just behind the front tire.

This sound will go away when the #8 cylinder is cut with a Tech II or similar tool.
The best way to isolate such a noise is to close the hood (mask injector and other noises), and use a Tech II to cut each cylinder. If the noise diminishes or goes away when one or more cylinder is cut, you've found the problem (piston slap, wrist pin, bearing, etc.).
Please post what you find. Mine sounds similar to the sound clip. I have had the noise for some time. But it got worse after I put a new rebuilt short block in. It sounds just like lifter noise but louder than it should be. Actually louder than my LT1 with solid lifters.

Did you reuse the old block and pistons? Who rebuilt the shortblock? I believe the LSx cylinder linings can only be bored .005". This sound is characteristic of hypereutectic pistons and excess piston to cylinder wall clearance.
I hear the same ticking in my 03 Z06. It seems to quiet down as the engine gets warm. It is very annoying to me. My 02 WS6 which had an LS1 did not have this ticking noise.
