Hi all. As I write this, I have just finished talking to the Police about my stolen car. No not that one, the Z stays in the garage at night where it is safe. I have (oops, had) a 1989 Accord as my daily driver. Guess I'll have to drive the Z more. My unfortunate situation made me start thinking about car alarms (which my Accord did not have).
What kind of security systems does the stock Z come with? I was assuming it was the standard horn honking, lights flashing system. When I bought it the salesman was very vague. Does it go off when the window is broken? I don't think motion sets it off. Does it?
Sorry to be so long winded.
I am positive someone will come along to correct anything wrong I might say, but I think the alarm will activate only if a door, hood, hatch is opened, and maybe if the car is tilted/lifted to a certain point.
Someone once told me the only way to steal a Corvette is to tow it away, but I am sure you will forgive me if I still worry about mine when I park it.
p.s.
Yes horn and light alarm only, no sirens. Also they say it is hard to install another alarm over the stock one because of it's intergration with the on board computer. YMMV

Yep, the stock alarm doesn't have a shock sensor. You CAN add a shock sensor to the stock alarm for about $50 and it will activate it when the car is bumped, etc.
window breaks
door is opened from inside while armed (slim jim)
trunk is pryed open
or door is opened when armed but unlocked
we're talking factory delco here, so ask yourself if you're cars worth a little added security....i'd look into a touch sensetive system with a quick pulse sound...ie. a quick loud noise to let them know it's there and if it's touched again, the alarm goes off....

1) Can the car be broken into - yes - the GM alarm is adequate, IMHO, as almost any alarm relies on people doing something when they hear it, and almost everyone ignores blaring car alarms - includingg the thief who does a quick grab and run of an item you've left in the car.
2) Can the whole car be stolen - doubtful - Without an "authorized" key, from what I know, it is almost impossible to start a C5 Corvette. The PCM won't start the engine unless it gets a key code match (that little pellet imbedded in the key holds the code - it is changed each time the engine starts). Even if the thief makes a duplicate of the key by buying a blank and cutting it to match yours, the code won't match what the PCM is looking for - therefore - no fire under the hood. Towing the car away is about the only way to take it.

FYI: these pellets are just resistors and there are only 17 of them. They actually have a device on the market than switches these pellets until it finds the right one.
The only reason I added a shock sensor is because I'm afraid for my wheels/tires. I got them stolen on my 99 and I figured it is even more likely on Z06.
The best solution??!!?? My office parking lot is monitored by security with over 17 cameras, including a security gaurd that patrols the parking lot. One of the benefits of working for the State, no problems... ever.
Sorry about your car being stolen though, that really sucks. :mad
Comments have been made that indicate that there's no shock sensor in the factory alarm. I have set my alarm off on a couple of occasions by closing the trunk with the system apparently armed. Scenario....You have locked your car to get some groceries...you return with them, and pop the trunk, without unlocking the doors. You load you groceries into the trunk, and close the trunk lid. I have the sticking trunk problem, and it sometimes takes a bit of extra force to close it. On two occasions, my alarm has sounded, and I have had to unlock my doors and put my key in the ignition to turn it off. Makes me wonder.... :skep:
In any case...if you can afford $50K for a desirable car, you can afford a little extra on additional security. The chevy dealership I bought my car new from offered Lowjack as an option. I spent the additional $800 or so for the lifetime installation (Lowjack with Early Warning).
alarm sounds when:
......
or door is opened when armed but unlocked
:iagree:
I have a problem with my alarm...
I get out and close the door without locking it when i get home, close the garage and go to bed. The next day when i open the door, the alarm goes off. This happens about 1 out of 15-20 times. The door is not locked and so i am wondering from the post i quoted above... how do you activate the alarm without locking it?
Thanks for any input.

Good question. You did not mention what year your Z06 is, but I know on some of the earlier C5's they have a passive device on the transmitter, once you reach a certain distance away from the car it locks the doors and activates the alarm, and once the transmitter is back in range it unlocks the doors and turns the alarm off.
Other then that maybe the alarm is passive and arms it's self after the car has been turned off for a specific amount of time. That is only a guess on my part though.

Are you sure the stock Z06 has a glass breakage sensor? That is news to me.
You also said "door is opened when armed but unlocked". You cannot arm the system without locking the doors.
honestly it may not have a glass breakage sensor, my 99 did and i assumed the z06 does too...could be wrong....
when you unlock the trunk the doors unlock as well but the alarm doesnt deactivate so you can open the door and the alarm will go off....atleast this happends to me every so often...
Install your own fuel pump kill switch no fuel no go. They start the car it runs if at all for a few seconds then dies. Now they made noise , car wont start , they run off. Low cost , and only you know where it is. I hate when i take my car for service or something where they need my keys. I always take my info out of glove box and never give them my correct address. I have known of 3 people at my work who had there vehicles broke into 2 stolden in the middle of the day one just the stereo. One of the stolden cars it was the car wash guy who got his address from glove box , they found the car crashed it was a navigator finger prints caught him. And the stereo thief was caught by a neighbor who's car he was also taking the stereo from in the same building. Apparently the guy new the car had a expensive stereo and speakers and asked the friend just days before if he lived in some perticular area to find out where he lived. I learned with loud stereo's never show them off close to where you entend on parking or to close to home I now people who where followed for there stereos and wheels.
