Default Question about the Z

Hello Z06 Forum. I often post in the C5 forum but have never posted here seeing as how I don't have a Z06. I do however have some questions about your cars. I have a 2000 pewter FRC and will in the future be looking to squeeze out more hp. While I know the first mod for me will be exhaust, what else sets a part a Z06 from my car (besides the brake ducts and screens)? I know there is a different intake, and lifters, but that is all I really know. What will it take for me to squeeze out 400 hp without going to NOS or a blower? Thanks guys and gals!!!! :seeya

Good headers and exhaust are a good start.
On a budget? Find someone who has pulled of their stock Z06 titanium exhaust and buy it from them. Use it.
A4 or M6? If you have an auto, put in a 3:42 rear gear.
Reduce as much weight as possible.
Find some Z06 wheels.
Then--cam, intake, MAF, throttle body, airbox.
From a suspension standpoint the Z06 is much different. Find and swap your sway bars, shocks, springs, etc.
You may want to upgrade your brakes also...
...hope that helps.

The specific difference are as follows:

Z06 has the LS6 heads - flow substantially better than stock LS1's

Z06 has a better flowing intake which all cars 2001 and up benefit from

Exhaust is a little more free flowing - Titanium versus the stock C5 exhaust

Cam is obvisiouly different and also varies for the years of the Z06's. 2001 versus 2002 and up

Trans has different has shorter gear ratios

suspension is configured with different shocks, roll bars, and springs. Shocks vary over the years with 2004 Z06 shocks being the best handling and riding shock.

If I missed anything someone will fill in the rest. Good Luck with your upgrades!!

I had a 99 FRC before my 02 Z06 and they are nearly the same car and yet very different too. I believe a FRC could be Z06'ed and make the two hard to tell apart.
Engine: a good cam & head package with a reprogram will do most of it. If you need to spend more add throttle body and intake upgrade. and BTW, and airbox mod is a given, as it is the best bang for the $
Handling: changing to Z06 size wheels and Z06 non run-flats will do most of it. Again if you need to spend a little more add Z06 bars and the latest Z06 factory shocks.
Brakes: They are the same rotors and calipers, although they are painted red, as found on the reg. C5. Pads are a little different. When you are due for brakes, replace the rotors, paint the calipers and use Z06 pads. Add the rear ducts if you want the look.
Gearing: the M12 trans in the Z06 has revised ratios in 1,2,3,5 & 6. The Z06 and the FRC have the same rear ratio. Change the rear ratio to 3.73 and it will closely match the overall ratios of the Z06 in all but 4th.

Change the exhaust system for the look or sound, not a performance mod.
A short throw shifter is a good change too.

I have a 2000 FRC with MN6 and Z51 suspension. I also have a ripper shifter and a Blackwing intake. My next mod is a set of Borla Cat Back Stingers. A part from that, I would like to get around to replacing the intake manifold and even the cam, but I don't like working on these high tech cars much. I used to build motors on jeeps, broncos, ect with my old man, but those things ran off a few wires and a 4 barrel. These new cars are nothing but wires and the injectors intimidate me for some reason. How much would it cost to have a notable mechanic do something as simple as replace the intake manifold??

I, too am from the old school, but these new computerized injected cars are very managable. A laptop computer running AutoTap will provide a window into the engine in ways we could never of had with older cars. Replacing the intake manifold as a stand alone is a lot of money for almost no HP gains. A cam change alone can produce noticable gains. You need to include improved valve springs and a computer reprogram with a raised RPM limit to maximize the results. At which point you're still only half way there. Do the heads too and the gains more than double. There are several proven head cam reprogam packages that are available. If you buy a package, either installed or do it yourself, you know the parts work together and produce solid results.
