Default Engine Oil Treatments

I know GM doesn't recommend them, but has anyone used one? Slick 50, Duralube, etc.

I've used them on other cars and noticed the difference in sound and smoothness of the engine. We also used slick 50 on a gear box of a 700 ton industrial plant refrigeration unit (home units are 2-4 tons) and the vibrations reduced dramatically allow us to avoid an expensive outage for several months. Clearly had increased lubrication properties.

So, anyone use any of them? Notice any results if you have?

Snake Oil IMHO.

I doubt if they will add to the lubrication properties of Mobile One and, may take away being that they are in dino based oil.

I think oil brands (not viscocity) get way too much scrutiny and baseless loyalty. I've gotten over 200,000 miles on a V8 with plain ole Quaker State (yeah, that bad s--t) on a vehicle that never got an easy day of driving in it's life. When it was sold, it used not a drop of oil or showed any sign of compression decrease or engine wear problems.

Just another free opinion. ;)

I know there are a few oil experts on here so I thought they might know if using one of them offered any advantage over Mobile 1. I never used synthetic before the Z06, but now I do of course.

They also sounded like snake oil to me until the experience with the industrial refrigeration unit. It was summer on the Gulf Coast and we were having high vibrations in the gear box between the electric motor and the compressor. Using an industrial vibration monitor, the vibrations were over the limit and the unit had to be taken down. We heard about Slick 50 and tried a couple ounces. The vibrations decreased to normal levels and allowed us to run through the summer until we could take it down in the winter months.

That experience got my attention and I've used them ever since, except for the Z.

Any other opinions or experience?

most of them do nothing except lighten your wallet, some with ptfe added will clog your oil filter as well. slick 50 got hit with a big lawsuit from the ftc for misleading and inaccurate claims and had to tone their ads way back.

while i wasn't there, your industrial gear box is quite different from an i/c engine and the product may have some benefit. what does the manufacturer of the gear box say to use as lubricants or additives?

fwiw, no oil or oem car and truck makers recommend oil or fuel additives from the auto parts store.

:iagree: The best you can hope for once you dump the stuff in your engine is that there will be no damage & if there is, will it be covered under warranty.
