May be upgrading to an '03 Z. Have read in the past that oil consumption was a problem for a while with the Z06s. Were the '03s included in this problem? Thanks for prompt response!
well......in my opinion, Vettes do burn a lot of oil during the break in period and...it depends on how you drive the car
I had a 2000 Coupe and went through 2 quarts my first 2000 miles. I did drive the car VERY hard back then so I'm sure it contributed to the consumption.
However, after those first 2000 miles, the car drove like a dream, I checked the oil regularly and never had to add another drop.
The Z was a little different, I babied the crap out the car the first 350 miles, no shifting over 4000 rpm's, nothing above 55 mph but then...I went to the track! :D
Needless to say, I changed the oil after 700 miles and the car was a half a quart low but, All I really do is race this car at my local strip and at occasional road course events and it's held up really well. I don't think I've added more than half a quart since then.
Some of the 01's had the oil consumption problem, and starting in 2002, they redesigned the piston rings to solve the problem. There hasn't been a problem since.
That's not to say the '02 + Z06s don't burn any oil. When driven hard, its normal for them to burn some oil. Mine burns about 1 quart every 3,000 miles with some very hard driving/racing. So, its not much.
I read an article just the other day that discussed this issue. GM said it was attributed to drivers doing high RPM and light loads on the engine. Instead of shifting to 3rd/4th they would stay in 2nd/3rd for extended periods of time. That kind of thing. Extreme street driving is the best way to discribe it.
weirdest thing...I have an 01Z and it burnt tons of oil, until I took the car to the track several times...now it doesn't burn a drop. I have been told that since GM loads the cars with synthetic out of the factory, the rings take a LONG time to break in (like 15-20k miles). Sure enought at 22k the car runs great and burns nothing. And I had an oil consumption test all scheduled and everything.

IIRC, what they were attempting to describe is more encountered in an urban/surburban environment where the cars repeatedly go up the gears and then float or decelerate under light throttle for a period of time, i.e., the way many people drive from stop sign to stop sign. The condition producing the problems is called 'ring flutter.'
But the PCV oil galley also created problems. It was never just the rings.
I have an 03 with 20,000 miles om it. It has been run hard from the start. Rev limiter is active at 7,000 RPM. I have had no oil consumption problems. I change the oil when the display tells me to.
