The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I can without any reservation, shame or manufacturer bias state that the current Z06 is a much better , hell, a far better car than the current SVT Cobra.
I define better as: better handling and road holding, better braking, better weight and weight distribution, better ergonomics, better fuel mileage, better looking (stock vs stock), better sounding (stock vs stock), better driver features and better build quality. The one area that many '03 SVT owners will be quick to point out when discussing which is the better car is found in the ridiculous statement "well if I add mod "x" I will beat a Z06 to hell and back blah, blah, blah :cry " Well that makes for an illogical and invalid comparison because the same can be said about the Z - or any car for that matter.
The fact (should ownwers chose to be unbiased) is that while you can very cheaply modify the '03 Cobra engine to make insane power, it is very difficult to consistently put that power to the ground reliably (as in without fear of breaking driveline parts) and with control (as in without fear of losing control of the car.) My yellow '03 Cobra makes about 470 rwhp and 480 rwtq but making full use of that power is pretty much useless in the driving application that I find enjoyable because the car's stock chassis and tires are not designed to handle it - nor can it without further major mods. For example, my blue car, the '03 Roush edtion, is modified in all areas that are lacking in the Cobra's stock form ie braking, handling and road holding and the ability to apply most of it power (just shy of 500 rwhp and tq) to the ground. It is very close, though not equal, to the Z (in the Z's stock form.) The Z is truly the total performance value in today's car market.
Having said that let me also state that the '03 Cobra has potential and is a great car for what it is - a Ford Mustang with a poweful engine priced very well in the market place. I will keep my Roush Cobra because it is unique (#1 of five total built for 2003) and it really is a pleasure to drive. The vert however will be gone as soon as I have made up my mind on which I prefer among the Viper SRT, 2004 Porsche Turbo convertible or the new C6.
Hope that helps,
