After watching a show about auto crash testing on TV last night, I started wondering how well our partitions would hold up in an accident. I hope it wouldn't come loose in a crash and become a projectile causing more injuries. My Andy's partition uses velcro on the bottom and two snaps on the top, is that enough to keep it solid in an accident?
I agree with tpocock, they are light enough to stay put or not hurt anything if they do. But if it is there to keep other articles from coming forward, there may be a different hazard if those items are heavy.
i just put the partition in my 01' and i guess , if an accident happens with my luck i would be hit with something from the trunk if i didn't have the partition in
bud:banghead:
I was thinking about this the other day. I got a template from Patches (thanks eh) and cut mine out of MDF. I haven't finished it yet, but the material alone has to way 7 or 8lbs. Taking the edge of it in the back of the head wouldn't be pretty. :nono:
Well, I have the Ecklers foam partition which just pushes into place and weighs next to nothing. About the only way it could cause any harm, is if you took a bite out if it and swallowed it. :D
Yea well, remember edges could hit you in the eye during an accident, causing you to lose the eye. I just heard from Andy and he said his partition is pretty darn safe. He also looked a few cars that were in accidents with his partition and they stayed in place. That makes me feel better.
Come on Guys! If it comes loose it will hit the back of the seat!! Not in the eye. Even if one side comes forward it will still hit the back of the seat. Now if you roll it there is a slim possibility that it will get over the back of the seats but at that point I truly don't think it will matter.
Hmmmm....I keep thinking of the kid in A Christmas Story...the bb hit him in the eye...guess he should have wished for a Fanner 50...lol...I love liberal thought...a boogy-man around every corner....I reckon you better remove that partition....lol
I guess you boys haven't seen what happens inside a car during an accident then. I don't leave things loose in my car for this very reason. And yes the partition would most likely hit the back of the seats if it came loosel....initially but then it could go anywhere. Your head my not even be behind the seat during a crash, it could be out the side window.

[B]I have the high density foam board for a partition also. Great stuff.[B]
Shylor I hear ya. :yesnod: One of my drivers hit a concrete culvert doing hwy speed when he fell asleep. The whole load of lumber straps snapped, the lumber went thru the headache rack & the cab, hit him in the back of the head, snapped his seatbelt and pinned him under the dash. Now the partition is a little different but I wouldn't want to get smacked with it at 60+mph either.
My 1-inch thick home-made foam & carpet partition can't weigh over a pound. For all of us in any type of car, [Camry, C5 coupe, SUV, Z06, Vega, Camaro, etc] there's plenty of other stuff in the interior areas that can and will get loose. Imagine some groceries in your Z's trunk....a nice can of soup....how'd you like to get whacked with THAT in a good crash?
No doubt...crashes are violent. But my point is--that's life in modern times. There are a lot of ways to get killed. But don't we all drive while yakking on cell phones? :nono:

That brings up a good point. Could items in your trunk knock the partition loose in an accident and thus causing more problems. Andy didn't say if the accidents he viewed that had his partition were with items in the trunks.
Shylor--What are you asking? Yes, these partitions are either pushed or lightly clipped in place. They are sound blockers, NOT ballistic barriers! No more, no less. If you have a can of soup in your trunk and hit a bridge abutment at 163 mph, that soup can will probably make it through your windshield, after going through your head. As will anything else back there. If you get hit from the side, anything in your passenger seat like a CD jewel case will be flying around, too
Think of all the stuff that has gone on the "shelf" under the rear window of a typical sedan, including "crown" air fresheners from about 10 years ago. And cheap speakers placed there, with a nice 12 ounce magnet. Oh yeah!
As for the poor partition, it's only there to block sound. It's not a culprit. So yes, items in the trunk will probably knock the partition loose. If you had a coupe, you'd have no partition. And the items in the 'hatchback" area will come flying forward, just like any car. So I'm not clear what your concern with the partition is. But they sure do work to quiet the car and improve the A/C effectiveness. :hurray:
