...Corvette collectibility is nothinhg new; the more rare the car, the more collectible/valuable it might be. Obviously the '63 Z06 is far more difficult to find than the current generation Z06 due to its small production numbers. But I'm just curious, speaking of low build numbers, will the new Z18, at about 150 units, be a desirable purchase for the collector? Offered to European buyers only, Corvette's very first such car, in Commemorative Edition coupe form is just now drawing old world reviews. A blend of Z06 options on a coupe platform, I wonder what you think its marketability might be. :flag
Re: Corvette collectibility is nothing new... (Z_OH_6)
First you have to ask yourself what is a collectible car ?
1. A car that never gets used.
2. A car that collects dust rather than miles.
3. A car that your saving for someone else to enjoy later.
4. A car that looses value for the first ten to twenty years you own it.
5. A car that might need a total overhaul when its worth 5k more than it cost new.
I'd say no current Corvette would be worth all the trouble it takes to make it collectible.
GM markets things as such to make one think they could retire from buying one, but its just not true.
Think about the cars that made it to collectible status today, had we known then what we know now don't you think we would have bought all of them ?
Most of them aren't rare or collectible by design, they're flukes in automotive history.
Sorry to go on and on but I think all of us need to drive it today and let someone else restore it tomarrow. :seeya

Having owned a bunch of cars - some of which were collectible - I feel I must chime in and agree! Hemi's, tri-power GTOs, Super Duty 455's, L88's, GT500's, etc. were great but I sure like driving them better!! Part of the joy of a collector car is the "hunt" and the "kill"......
Re: Corvette collectibility is nothing new... (varkwso)
Yep, I'll buy that. I bought a new '72 and kept it until '81. I sold it for several thousand more than I paid for it but I drove it and enjoyed and didn't consider that as a windfall profit, just what it realized by being kept clean and maintained well. The European Z18 seems to be half of one type Vette and half of another and I wondered what people's thought were on it. Perhaps only time will tell. :)
Rare colors, limited production, special vin numbers... all that sounds great. However, my Corvette is for driving, and time behind the wheel is close to time spent in heaven.
New collectible cars have a long way to go down in value, before they begin to rise in value.
Given that no one knows which cars will truly become valuable many years down the road, you would be better off putting your money in a bank savings account and earning 1 %.

The Z16 is the collectable, there will be a bunch of Z18's :chevy
The Euro version that we're speaking of here is the Z18 nomenclature. Only 150 to be built. It DOES copy the paint scheme of the 2004 Z16 Commemorative model with the blue paint with red and silver striping. :chevy
Probably to the person that wants that specific car. The other anniversary cars are sought after by certain folks and no doubt the 50th anniversary edition will be too. I, for one, would sure like to have an original '63 Z06 to go with the '03! :D
Re: Corvette collectibility is nothing new... (RPO_Z06)
