Not bad for the car, but bad for the environment and will keep you from passing a smog check.
The evap system controls the evaporation of gas from the gas tank.
When you start the car the computer goes through a test of the system to make sure that it is holding pressure and then purges the evaporate canister that holds the excess evaporation. If there is a leak (most commonly the gas cap) anywhere in the system, or a plugged canister, you will get this message.
We likely need to be diagnosed by a dealer.
