I just wondered, as around where I am our CHP takes a pretty dim view of high speed runs. I figured that you probably had the kind of open space there in Texas to have that kind of fun. Fastest public road run I did, I hit 140+ early one morning (out in the desert in So. Cal.), and the car was dead stable. I was really impressed. Maybe I'll get a chance to see where the limiter kicks in some day. :D
In response to:
" thought that there was no limiter in 5th gear and so the top speed is regulated by the power you have in that gear and not by a rev limiter "
If you look at the PCM using something like an Autotap, you'll see that on Corvettes with the manual transmission, the PCM has no clue as to which gear you are in. The rev limiter is in effect at all times.

Re: Z06 Top Speed (zak)
Motor Trend radar verified a Z06 at 174 mph, dead stock, redline limited in 5th. I'm guessing tire growth contributed as the theotical redline top end is 171 mph.
All the gear in the world won't help you if you don't have the HP at the rpm where top speed is REACHED, not just peak HP at a lower rpm that drops before redline.
A great example of that is how the C4 Callaway Twin-Turbo street cars couldn't reach the claimed 191 mph top speed in 6th gear when tested independently----they were low rpm L98s with torque to spare but couldn't overcome the giant 0.50 overdrive. Besides, they only made a litte over 400 BHP at 4400 rpm and even less at the 5500 rpm redline, not exactly top end screamers. One Callway tested couldn't even reach 170 mph in 6th. HP makes top speed, not torque. A ZR-1 with similar HP but less torque and a 7200 rpm redline could have beaten the Callaway in top speed.
I'd rather see the hp go up and engine redline go up, another 1000rpm and same gears top speed will go up and quarter times will improve. There is a difference between quick and fast and I think we got the best of both worlds, not to mention the handeling. They closed the autobon here in california so I got some 3.90s ,lowered my top speed , improved acceleration. Were I live you cant spend much time above 130 without picking up a few cruisers and a copter. hit 165 a few times , car was stable but safe area ran out. I like going fast but I love the feeling of hard acceleration.
Not that I'm a speed freak but I've had my Z up to 170 in upstate NY in a very rual area. My car was still pulling real strong in 6th and I find it hard to beleive that it will top out at 171. My rev limiter has LS1 edit to 7300 rpms, I do drive it like I stole it. :yesnod:

I would say 170 mph qualifies you as a speed freak.
1000 HP wouldn't make you any faster in 5th gear without your extended redline. Your car might still top end in 5th, somewhere slightly over 190 mph. Then again, with your HP, you could pull 6th nicely too. :smash:
Our Z's are drag-limited. Wanna go faster than 175, then work on your aero. Don't forget to add a little downforce and alignment. The gears are for real racers and not for bragging rights to break 200mph. Besides, where are you actually going to drive that fast, anyway? Drop in 3.73, 3.90, or even 4.10 and work on aero (and get alignment right) and you'll get closer. Dropping the car can help, too.
You know that the z06 does good numbers for 0-60 and 1/4 mile,
however the top speed is not that amazing. Even the regular C5 does
175mph. So GM did not do a good job for z06. The Ratio of gears should have
been modified to take the z06 to 185mph,
Acceleration is more important than top speed. How often do you go 175+mph? "Well, but I want to know it can..." Unimportant. It's not applicable to 99% of the owners of the car. I'd much rather have a car that can run low 12's in stock form at a good mph than worry about a few mph of top end. Gm got it right.
Actually somebody has gotten their Z up to 240mph in 6th gear on a dyno, so its really just a matter of aerodynamics.
The Z06 might well be able to do better than the 171 number. If one were to tape all the panel gaps, screens...... lower the car....... put skinny tires on it....... you might get a higher number.
Anybody want to give it a try??
Personally, I can't find enough open space to get above 140mph....... plus I don't have the ***** to take a chance on killing somebody or getting my license revoked to attempt the 170mph threshold. Nor do I really want to try.

Well, I live within a mile of a newly paved, straight, low traffic four lane where my wife and I have figured out how to "top out" the car and not have a chance of getting caught. Only one problem. The Roadfrog doesn't have the guts....today.
:D :D :D
"OK", guys, I do have a few mods. My car will hit 172-173 at 6,500 PRMs. I used the Hypertech computer upgrade to get the rev limiter to 7,100 PRMs and the car will go 182-184 MPH. Both of these speeds are in 5th gear. It is a little hard to look at the speedometer for long at that speed. Yes, I have done it several times. No, I won't tell you where.
guys i just ran the calculations today. with a lightly modified Z06 putting out 360hp at the wheels with a 4.10 diff the car can hit 186 in 6th before running out of power. I used .29 as my Cd and 21.3 ft^2 for the frontal area. After 186 drag is too great unless you have more power available. if anyon is interested i can email the spread sheet, it comes with a graph of hp vs speed as well. just im me if interested.
This is a my Dad can beat up your Dad, My ***** is bigger than yours and Yo mamma type of issue. What type of consumer hits 170+ in a production car more than maybe once in there life. Chime in y'all I'd love to hear it. Chevy made an awesome sports car for the consumer. The Z has it all and I could care less what anyone else says. The marketing team for Corvette is second to none.
I read something funny in the c6 forum......that only posted chevy numbers are acceptable. So, if chevy says its 171.....then it could not POSSIBLY go any faster. I made the claim that it was possible that the top speed of the c5 is 179-180MPH.....and all the c6 people went off on me....they said it couldn't possibly go that fast......so eveyone who says faster that 171 is a liar.... :troll
I guess I shouldn't go into the C6 section :jester Check my signature for my top speed then notice where where I live. :D
