Default Getting keys coded and cut with keyfobs Help

I bought this car as a wreck and did not get any key's for it. How do I go about getting the key's cut, security chip coded and two keyfobs programmed. Do I have to go to GM or can a local locksmith do it for me.

You should be able to go to the dealer with the VIN and proof of ownership and they will be able to cut the keys and such.

To my knowledge that is the only way you are suppose to be able to get new keys. There was a story on 60 Minutes about a month ago about how car thieves were writing down VIN numbers from car dashboards, and going to dealers and having keys made to steal the car at a later time. They even had undercover 60 Minute folks go to numerous dealers with just VIN numbers and no proof of ownership. About 30% made the keys anyway. Scary. I went in to have a new key made for our Tahoe and this particular dealer would not do it without proof of ownership saying that GM had sent out notices to their dealers alerting them to this problem.

Take an index card and cover it with black tape and put that over your VIN number. I did this with my last coupe out of peace of mind.

Hopefully you have an owner's manual, if so, the programming of the key fobs is pretty easy and explained well enough for the average joe.
