I am a 20 minute walk from the ticket window at WestWorld, where the Barrett Jackson auction is held each year. As you might expect, I have been there most of the weekend. An amazing array of vehicles on display, including hundreds of vette's. I took 3 rolls of film, and will post some of the pics soon.
My wife and I put 200,000 miles on a '81 Accord,it isn't a 'Vette but it sure helped out when it was needed.
My Mom had an '80 Accord and it went through an engine and transmission within 85,000 miles... and she drives like an old lady (oh wait, she is an old lady now - haha). As my Dad says "biggest piece of junk he ever owned...". I had to agree because I got it when I turned 16... man that thing was junk, plain and simple. The 1990 Beretta I bought shortly after the engine went out AGAIN was an awesome car! No major repairs for nine years and over 200,000 miles.
I was watching and almost towards the end of the show, one of the narrators was asking one of the other narrators "which cars do you feel will be the next up & coming classics". He stated three or four cars , and the last few cars he mentioned very quickly were the Corvette ZR1 and following behind it, the Corvette Z06. As they were starting to discuss it, a commercial came on, so I didn't hear the rest. There was a '63 split, red in pretty good shape. They didn't know if it was a matching # car or not, but it went for $32K. It's a lot of fun to watch this auction, if you're into it.

Wow. You are lucky to be so close to enjoy such a great auction. Was there a lot of traffic? Were the hotels packed?
Sledgehammer, C4, C12  and I can't remember the last one. They were all awsome Vettes 685K worth and the owner said he was going to drive all of them :smash: Poor guy my heart goes out to him :yesnod:
There is something very odd about one guy buying 4 of the same car and paying that much for them.
It made for very Good advertising for Callaway.
I disagree. This guy appeared to be a very knowlegable and well educated vette/callaway car collector and when they interviewed him after buying all 4 callaways he made it clear he did alot of research and studying on the callaway vettes and was 100% sure that these vehicles would do nothing but appreciate from here and i agree with him. He also seemed very sincere in his motives that he was out for the investment here yet he would also enjoy the cars and drive some on the streets and the track. I am sure anyone who saw this would agree these CALLAWAY vettes were all huge powered AWESOME machines expect for the 97 C5 which was grossly underpowered vs. the other three. :chevy ALso, although these 4 vettes were all callaway vettes they were all 100% entirely different machines easily distinguished from one another!

I agree. A lot of these guys do they're homework and have the money to manipulate the market for certain cars. Callaway is a great performance and custom carraige shop. Only few were able to afford to have they're cars signatured by them. Same with Lingenfelter. He wouldn't bid on a regular C4 or C5, that's obvious. But, these limited few he will and now he brought to everyone's attention what big bucks he spent and how eager he was to win the bids. He has now set the price for the market of these cars. And, they are going to do the same with the ZR1 when they're ready. Personally, that's why I feel the Z06 will have it's turn. :auto:
A true classic will finally show it's colors 20 yrs after its made, when the common people decide what it is they want in a classic. Like the C2, and in my opinion, the C5.
That guy is a Callaway nut. He has another Aerobody TT car in his collection already.
Regarding the conspiracy theory of him buying them up to build up Callaway....Please  :bs here's why....
Reeves Callaway has had the TT ZR1 Speedster for sale for quite a while....400k was the asking price. I don't think he thought the car would sell or only 175k. The selling price of the Sledgehammer was 400k back in 1988, and it only brought 205k. Several of us thought this was way too cheap.
A friend of mine, a fellow Callaway nut also, was there bidding on the cars. But unfortunately for him the other guy was packin mad cash.
