I have a 03 ZO6. Want to get a new thermostat.. I drive the car daily in all weather types, traffic, open highway, and autox/roadcourse it.. Which thermostat would be better for me and do u need a switch to turn it on or will it do it automatically like the stock one.. Im located near philadelphia btw.. many thanks
Unless you plan to change the temps at which the fans come on installing a new (lower) stat will be a waste of money, IMO. With the fans still coming on at 190+ all a lower stat will do is to delay, by a short interval, the length of time from start-up until it reaches fan temp. So if you have a 170 stat, it will open 20 degrees sooner (colder) than the stock (190) stat, which will slow down the time it takes to reach 190 - when the fans come on. The fans will dictate the temp after the thermostat is open, regardless of the stat's designed opening temp - make sense?
To turn the fans on earlier you need either LS1Edit, Predator (or the similar Hypertech), or a fan controller like the Vinci unit.
Sorry for the long winded answer, hope this helps.
It's your money, but you don't need a new thermostat. It'll only make your car take longer to warm up. If you want to reduce operating temps under normal driving conditions, program your fans to come on sooner. But don't forget that aluminum engines are designed to run hot.
i run the stock one and i see 190 f. at cruise speed, ie, 79 mph.
i am located in northern florida and put the hammer down on the buckman bridge, the car still stays at 190 f...
:iagree: I see 190 @ 80 MPH. BTW, I added Water Wetter in my coolant and haven't noticed any change.......still 190 @80. In stop & go/bumper to bumper traffic, I see 205 to 215.
