Probably a stupid question. But with all of the talk about leaking differentials, can someone please explain to the less-technically-oriented how one knows that the differential is leaking? Many thanks.
Re: How do you know your differential is leaking? (Geneus)
Sometimes they'll come overfilled from the facotry and fluid will come out the vent at the top. Basically if you have drips of fluid under the car it's leaking. Also, run you finger over the back side of the plastic tub. Mine was oily when the rear was leaking. The air flow gets it all over.

The thing that always tipped me off was an accumulation of black spots that
covered the rear facia on my car (light color). The oil would leak out get caught in the wind and stick to the rear, then dirt would stick to the oil. Black
spots! :U
It's fixed now,it only seeps out and a little dirt sticks to the diff. I can live with that.

I noticed spots on the garage floor but I couldnt see how my new car could have a leak. Right? When I got the oil changed they told me it was leaking soI had it fixed.

After about a 100 mile road trip I stopped at a rest stop and I could smell the heated oil that was all over the outside of the diff as I walked by the rear tire. I took a look under there after the remaining 300 miles of the trip and the oil was everywhere. Drips on the bottom of the rear crossmember and all over the black sump for the trunk. Took it to the dealer and had it fixed then it seeped for another week or two. Cleaned that up a few times and now all is good. No more seeping and no more leak.
