Default Z06 purchase

I am interested in a 01 Z06 or 02 Z06. I know there is a money difference and a performance difference. How much performance difference? Was there any major problems or complaints about the 01 vs 02?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I test drove an 01 before buying my 02... the 02 is noticeably faster.
It's fairly easy to mod an 01 to make the same power though.

Other reasons to go with an 02:
-heads-up-display is standard on 2002, but wasn't available on 2001 z06's
-electronic driver's seat with memory package
-better clutch
-more fade-resistant brakes
-2001's had a problem with oil consumption due to faulty piston rings
-more factory warranty remaining

A few other minor things that got fixed for 2002 as well.

However, if you find a low-miles 2001 at a very good price and still under warranty, there's no reason not to consider it... the main issue to take care of is the piston ring fix if the car burns oil.

Thanks for that info, I don't really like the thought of buying an 01 and possibly have to change the piston rings.

I currently have an 00 coupe but would like more performance but not at the expense of having problems occur later. My coupe has had no problems and I like that about it.

If I can find an 02 at a great price I might consider.

Thanks again of your insight

;)

I suggest that you go with the 02. It is a better car, you will probably get an 02 with a lot less miles on it, and the price between an 01 and an 02 should not be that significant. Good luck.

With the market the way it is go with an 02 and maybe if you look hard enough you might be able to find an 03 for a few bucks more. :yesnod:

You should definitely look at and test drive both model years. The '01 had 385 hp and this was bumped up to 405 in '02 (30 additional horses). The LS6 engine was plagued with oil consumption problems its first year; however, GM addressed the problem with a technical service bulletin fix consisting of new piston rings and that fix went to production for '02.

Whenever buying used make sure you have a VIN# check along with local and state police checks to determine if there was anything going on with the car. Finally, the all important professionally certified inspection is in order.

Best of Luck!!!!!!!!!!

:iagree: I'm with Bud on this one - plenty of b*lls in an '01, and a lot of bang for the buck. Some of them can be oil users - find one that's still under warranty or has had the re-ring done. Ours uses a quart every 1500 or so, which I don't regard as excessive for a high performance engine.

You can't go wrong with any year, assuming TSBs are fixed, but if you want the most beautiful z06 color ever, Electron blue, you have to get a 02 or 03

I HAD to get an 01 since that was the only year Speedway White was available on the Z. An EB 02 would have been my next choice but it would have cost me at least 5 grand more and I see a lot more of those around than the SW. No complaints here...I can live with my car being about 2/10's slower in the quarter than the 02 and up.
