Saw some polished Z wheels yesterday and thought they were real sweet. Would it be out of the question to sandblast the paint off, hand polish and clear coat? Got a quote of $700 for OEM from Houseof Wheels with a core charge. I am still waiting for a reply as to whether they are clearcoat.
The stock wheels have about three coats of paint from the factory. This info
came from a guy on another forum that had them chemically stripped and
buffed out with a Portercable high speed grinder and buffing wheel!
I haven't read of anyone trying media blasting and buff but I'm sure it can
be done.
If you are looking to do it 'on the cheap', I'd get a set of wheels and do
the paint removal myself. The buff out can be done by you (you can rent the grinder
from Home Depot) or most detail shops have this on their list!
You have lots of options!
Do not media blast if you want to polish them; you're just creating more work for yourself. Get them acid dipped to strip off the factory finish - I think a chrome shop would have a dip tank available. Good luck.
