Default Headers and exhaust question

I think my next mod is going to be LGM headers, follow by an aftermarket exhaust. I have two questions:

first, how loud would LGM headers without cats into corsa titaniums without mufflers be? I'm not really concerned about my own comfort, but if it's so loud I can't drive through a neighborhood at 1500RPM without pissing people off, it's too loud :) Do the mufflers corsa offers with the system do much to reduce the sound level?

second, can I get the LGM headers without cats (this is going to have to be a two part mod here , $$ ) and use the stock cats until I get the titanium system, and take them out then? Any extension parts needed?

Thank you

Short answers

1. VERY!
2. Yes... but why ?

Long answers

1. If you've never had headers before, I strongly suggest waiting until you can afford to get high flow cats with the system. I think the additional cost is 400 bucks.

Here are my reasons,

a. Headers are LOUD, It doesn't matter if the system has high lfow cats are not, your car is going to be noticeably louder. I think a system with high flow cats will be much more bearble and you're only losing 2-3 horsepower...which you won't notice.

Don't get me wrong, A vette and headers is like a steak and wine, but everything has it price. I just hope you like the sound of a car with Ball$ :D

b. Going with straight cats will begin to leave an annoying residue on your rear facia if you don't constantly clean your car , not to mention the soot that naturally comes with an aftermarket system.

2. The Z comes with a very nice titanium exhaust system...why would you want to waste money buying another ?

a. The stock cats in no way compare to the high flow cats that LGM produces. If you're going to modify your exhaust system...My opinion is that you should do it right, or not at all.

hope this helps :)

I can really go either way with or without the cats..There are no emission tests in florida, so I don't need them, and I wash my car weekly..so it seems like I'll be paying an extra $400 for nothing on top of losing HP (granted 2-3 is not much).

As far as the exhausts go, Corsa claims the system has %74 better flow than the stock system..I do not have anything against the stock titaniums, I just wanted a little different sound. I will have the headers w/ stock titanium combo on for awhile before I make a decision on exhaust anyway, perhaps it will grow on me :smash:

Let me respond to your post with a real world example how loud headers are..

I had a 6 speed 2000 coupe with long tube headers, high flow cats and a corsa exhaust before I bought my Z.

One sunny afternoon I'm winding through the gears on the local interstate and out of no where a state trooper pulls me over.

He proceeds to tell me that he was radioed from a Helicopter!, that's right...they heard my car all the way up in the air, and I had high flowing cats! ...I am telling from the heart, your car will sound like Dale Jr's when you punch it if you go without cats...I hope you like it.

I agree with Ledfoot. I would try the system with the stock Ti and then add a catback after you've had it a little while. No cats will help the sound thru the stock Ti but put a ton of soot and a residue on your lower rear fascia. This residue is what drove me to put the cats back on.

You are talking about an exhaust system with NO sound suppression at all!!
What do you think it will sound like????

Ken

PS I have a sound clip of a car with that system on it. I can e-mail it but it's almost 7MB!! Way too loud

I realize it would be loud, I was just wondering if the mufflers for the Corsa system did much good at all..They're pretty small.
