Just ordered a Donaldson Blackwing. I was going to get the Vararam Ram Air but got a little scared of the installation. Did I make a reasonable substitution? How does the Blackwing compare to the Vararam?
I heard that the duel cone filter systems create some air turbulance. Doesn't the Vararam do the same thing......since there are still 2 sources of intake air? Let me know since I'm kinda new to this Z06 thing!
Blackwing
The Variram and Blackwing are two different animals.
Like the other post has said won't make a hill of beans if you S/C or H/C at a latter date.
Blackwing is prefered if you do a S/C.
I don't have anything to offer on the Vararam but I did just install the Blackwing on my car last weekend. The installation was pretty easy (I used a combination of the instructions that came with the Blackwing and the ones that I found on this forum.) The car is so fast out of the box that it was hard to discern anything different other than it just seemed like it wanted to move out alot quicker. I'm also new to the Z (just bought mine in January) and I would tell you that you can't go wrong with the Blackwing.
Just installed the blackwing on my Z16. The blue filter element looks awesome when the hood is open and you are looking at the front of the car. It blends in with the Lemans Blue paint scheme. I agree we couldn't really fell the performance change, but it seemed that it spooled up a little quicker. Thats just my opinion. The stock air box doesn't give the LS6 the bad A### looks it should have, never mind the extra air flow you get from the blackwing.
Donaldson makes filters for most military applications. Tells me alot about their filtering technology and manufacture processes. I've seen Donaldson filters caked in that stuff they call sand in Kuwait/Iraq. It looked like a bees hive and it was still flowing filtered air to our combat vehicles which are carrying our most presious national treasures - our troops.
That's all I need to see and know. It's a Donaldson BW for me.
