Almost home with the new Z16 when all of a sudden I hear a chime and see the message "SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING/ SERVICE TRACTION CONTROL", I get home turn the ignition off and start back up and everything is cleared. The next day leave to to go to our montly corvette gathering and the chimes start again and the message appears, get to my destination and turn the ignition off and everything is fine until almost home again and then you guessed it. All of a sudden it hits me that the each time the message and chimes appeared it was exactly at the same location. Carried it back to the dealer who pulled the codes back couldn't duplicate the fault until they drove to my neighborhood and the message would activate everytime they would pass this certain spot. Anyone else ever have this happen? What is the cure?
Sounds like maybe you should take a different road to get home.
Seriously, it sounds like radio, microwave or some other outside electrical or static interference. Is the spot where it goes off near any high power electrical lines, microwave or cell phone towers? Or anything like that?
What did the dealer have to offer for an explanation since they were able to duplicate the problem?
I thought about the different route, but it is the only way in or out. They don't have any solution to offer as yet. They were going to get on the phone with some of GM's engineers, they are as baffled as me.
Thanks for the offer Tony, but I don't think it is that serious. At least I know that it is some type of interference causing it this time. My first C5 (99 coupe) had the same light come on constantly with nothing common in occurence, finally ended up with GM buying that one back.
Most bizarre. I am not an EE by education, but I agree with some of the folks above that it is probably caused by some form of electrical/wave interference in the area. However, I suspect that it would have to be unusually strong to have such a unique and repeatable effect on the car's computer. I would be most curious to see whether you could get your hands on another Corvette just like yours and see whether it suffers from the same problem in that one area. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Re: Weird Problem (KBlanke)
I think I would put on a tin foil hat when I drove past that spot. :D
If it were RF causing that problem it would have to be a high concentration to interfere with your system, IMHO.
same thing happened to mine. every time i started the vette and drove a little the light/chime would come on. -- hit reset for a quick fix.
dealership replaced sensor on steering colum.
problem is 98% fixed..... every once in a blue moon it will still chime.
i just restart vette and it goes away.
i did a search for traction control and told dealership what the problem was,
they still had my car for a week, then installed a new sensor..... expensive fix.
search the forum, it looks like it is a common problem.
Ok here is the latest: As part of the deal the dealer swapped the stingers off of my 02 for the stock exhaust on the 04. Chevrolet is telling the tech to swap the two systems back and go to the spot causing the problem to see if if does the same thing. I told him that the exhaust has nothing to do with it and he agreed but said he had to follow what Chevy told him. If it does the same thing (which I am sure it will) they will send one of their engineers to look at it. Will keep everyone posted
They swapped out the exhaust systems and of course the problem persisted, today they swapped the ECM and that seems to have solved the problem. I will pick it up this afternoon, still don't know what was interfering with it but as long as it doesn't happen again I will be happy.
