I finally got some wheel time in to try out my new hurst shifter. It shifts great, however I have a huge rattle... I know, I know, tennis ball, PVC mods, wheel weights, new ****... I will be trying some/ all of the above to eliminate the rattle.
I never knew the rattle would be that bad. I wonder why some of you have had no rattle and others have had a rattle?
Even if I grab the **** tight in my hand, it still rattles. I do not think any of the above methods are going to solve the problem, but we will see.
I am not sure if the vibration I had was as bad as you were describing, but mine did sound like it was vibrating horribly when I first put mine in. After trying many things I came accross the PVC cap mod and let me tell you it will make a huge difference. I don't really understand how it could have but it did. I think the bad vibration sounds are because of flipping the rubber shift gasket. When flipped, that inner housing is flipped up making a 2 inch tube which becomes a reverberation chamber. When you put the PVC cap inside of it, it completely cuts out the sound waves. Also, if you make your hole the right size in the top of the cap, it hugs the shifting handle verry snuggly which I am sure helps on the actual vibrations. I tried egg shell foam rubber, sound dampening material, etc... but the simple addition of the PVC cap was twice as good as any of the other solutions. In case you haven't seen it, here is the link.
:iagree:
I forgot about this... now that I recall, I did have some pretty bad vibrations when I tried it without the stops in at all. I put them back in and had to adjust them in and out a few times to get it just right. If you put them too far in you keep it from completely engaging into first (I had it pop out of first quite a few times when I had them in too far), and if you have them too far out, the shaft vibrates against the housing and causes the vibration that you seem to be describing. Put it in 3rd and then screw the stop in until it causes the shaft to move slightly, then back it off about 1/4 turn. Repeat for 4th but don't forget to check all gears. Don't forget to use some locktight to keep them in place. Sounds like if you do this and add the PVC cap you will be a happy camper like the rest of us Hurst users. Hope this helps.
Lot's of guys just take them out. I have mine in, have never had a rattle until just recently. I'm gonna pop 'em & see if that gets rid of it. :yesnod:
NOPE, took the stops out. I am surfing for new shift *****. Looking at the MCW...
Like I said above, I think when the stops are out, it allows the shaft to rattle against the housing just enough to cause a vibration. I would put them in, adjust according to instructions (they are there for a reason).
What you have to remember about the dreaded Hurst rattle is that it is a vibration harmonic from the driveline that emits through the shifter shaft, then is transmitted out the shifter **** like a speaker. Rubber caps over the shifter really don't effect the rattle, they only quiet driveline noise emitting from under the shifter, not the rattle. The rattle is a different sound and one that if you have it, you will know, it's very distinctive. I have found that the main thing that helps eliminate or reduce it is the shifter ****, (since it is the speaker for the rattle). Electrical tape on the shifter shaft threads helps some also. I currently have a Delrin ****, it rattles some in certain gears. I will be trying a MGW pistol grip ****, because it is heavier. They make a new pistol grip style and I'll get it when they make some in black.
I think the rattle is worse in the Z.
I installed my hurst in my 99 coupe according to the directions, adjusting, torquing and loctiteing as instructed and had no vibration problems.
When I took the shifter out of the coupe and installed it in my Z I had the rattle. I did the PVC cap and readjusted and loctited everything including the adjusting screws and stops and it is nice and quiet now.
Sure glad I saw this thread..... Thought I was the only person out there with this problem as everyone likes to say never seen that before..... mine is Severe
I tried several ***** before finding the one that not only looked and felt good but cured all the buzzing and rattling the super stiff Hurst transmits along the lever. And I never installed the stops in the first place.
I bought and love the MGW Gripper. $45 and shifting nirvana.
And since it screws down further than any **** I've seen you can get just the right height you need. I have it screwed all the way down, and love it. Snick, snick, snick.
