I'm going to add the Hurst as my next mod. I haven't bought it yet so I don't have their installation instructions and I'm wondering if I can do the job myself or not. How much work is involved to drop in the new shifter? Thanks in advance!
You'll want the instructions CF member Patches authored. Its one of the best I've seen. Yes you can do it. Its actually very easy. Your biggest challenge will be removing what is commonly called the "demon key" its a small wedge shaped pin that tightens the OEM shifter ****. Some times it can be a real bear to get out.
If you re-use the OEM **** be prepared for rattles and buzzes. Seems the super stiff Hurst transmits harmonics back up to the tip of the **** which can cause some noise. I finally found a line of ***** that don't make any noise with the Hurst. Consider MGW if your out looking for *****.
Here's mine mounted on my Hurst
Good luck and the Hurst actually gets better with use.
Like said there's some good detailed instructions w/ pics floating around. Basically you....
1. Remove demon key and shift **** (do it by using two small screw driver on each side, not vice grips. You'll see what I mean when you get to it)
2. Remove center console and radio trim
3. Remove "gasket"
4. Remove stock shifter (four bolts)
5. Install hurst
6. Put it all back together.
Tooke me 2 hours even droping a shift stop that I was removing into the tranny tunnel.. that was a PITA!
Hardest part for me was removing the demon pin :mad which I got out by rocking it back and forth with vice grips. Also don't drop a bolt in the tunnel like me.
That seems like a lot more work than buying a $2 PVC rubber cap and drilling a hole and sliding down the stick into the gasket opening. But this does look nice and may sound even better.
Here is the link for the PVC cap mod. Scroll down to KCvetteowner's comments...
Yes may be longer work than PVC Rubber Cap mod but since the HURST Shifter Boot is on my Z06, no way to unmount anything about the Hurst Shifter, the job seems to be done for ever !!
get a buddy to hold the towel on the shift ***, while u take 2 screwdrivers to get the "demon key" out. That was actually one of the easier steps on my install
