Default fuel filter change?

a friend of mine has a 97 coupe and is currently having problems with his fuel filter and/or fuel pump. in our searches we found that 97-98s have potential fuel filter problems as soon as 10k. i recently purchased a '01 z06 with 53k...is there a need to replace my fuel filter?

just curious, what makes a fuel filter fail if you are using clean fuel?

you know thats a good question...i would imagine it shouldnt fail..however, when we've been looking for solutions to the fuel pump problem we've found that other vette owners have had clogged fuel filters that attributed to there overall fuel problem....due to the amount of people that have found toubles with there filter, i was curious to know if i needed replace mine since it crossed the 50k line?

Fuel can carry a lot of debris, and with the amount of flow we can get with high HP cars, the filters can definitely get dirty.

Now, as for your 53k situation...

You want cheap insurance? Here's some fun preventatives:

Change the fuel filter
Change the spark plugs and examine the plug wires
Change the oil and oil filter
Change the air filter
Examine the brake pads / rotors and replace if needed

Additional items I would do:
Flush / fill coolant
Flush / fill brake fluid
Change both belts
Examine hoses for cracking / hardness and replace as necessary

These are the things I would do on any used car with that many miles.

All these "wearable" items are relatively easy and cost effective and will put that car back in tip top shape barring any major problems internally.

Plus you get to go over your baby with a fine tooth comb, and that's always a good time!

If you decide to change it yourself, be careful and relieve the pressure before you disconnect any lines. The fuel will shoot out all over you.

How do you know that the filter was not changed before you bought the car?

thanks everyone for the advice...i think im just going to change the fuel filter regardless...at over 50k, and having just bought it, it will be a good benchmark and i shouldnt have to change it for atleast another 50k....we'll see what happens?
