I noticed some stuff in my wheel wells and on the side of car. I put the it up on stands and it looked like maybe the oil fitler had been leaking some. Is it possible to tigthen a filter to much, so that it could leak. I got the Mobil 1 M1 107 filter and just tighted a little tonight I will check it friday and see how it it looking when I take her out friday morining.
Hmmm... Never heard of over-tightening to cause a leak but I wouldn't say it's impossible (NEVER DO THIS, always hand tighten). Although, if you did not clean off the metal contact point for the filter or have nick on around the edge of the contact point, that could be the cause. You could also have a bad o-ring on the filter itself (although I have never seen this either).
I also take a "tiny" bit of the used oil and lube the new filter o-ring before installing.
Are you certain the leak is from the from the around the filter?
You should be careful to not overtighten the filter. If you see it's still leaking when you check, I would just get a new filter and replace the one on there. Don't forget to add a quart of oil.
Be sure that the old gasket comes off with the filter. It is possible to have the old gasket stick in place and then put the new filter on. You will end up with two gaskets. This is a big problem that will leak. My guess is you may have done that. I always check my old filter to see the gasket came off and then check the mounting surface before I put on the new filter. I made the mistake once and everything looked fine until the car got to operating temperature, then oil started leaking everywhere. Scared the heck out of me. Good luck.
