Default Hurst Shifter in..............

Took little over an hour, no problems, not even with the "Demon Key". That just popped right out!

There is however LOTS of transmission noise transmitted up through the shifter............. :mad

I do have a spare tennis ball, I think, but don't know what to do with it!
I think there was some mention of covering the inner (?) shift boot

Observations:

1. I used the stock setup for side to side spring tension, although it feels really stiff! I may have to go one lighter.

2. This shifter F---Ging ROCKS!!! :yesnod: Good GOD! Talk about banging shifts!!!! I don't think I'll ever miss a shift again, it feels so ...planted and positive!

3. It has such a shortened throw, I (at first) didn't think I had it in gear.

4. It makes the stock shifter seem as though it was stuck in mud and it was just "rowing" around and if you happened to find a gear, any gear, you were lucky (well mabe not THAT bad!) but close.

5. You six speed guys....................you really gotta' try one of these......and I take back all I previously said negative about it!

:yesnod:

I've been wanting to get a Hurst shifter myself but concerned about the added noise. Please reply after you try damping it. Did you change the stock grip out?

I am using the stock grip now. I have a white Hurst **** on the way. I want the white **** (2" in diameter) just because that's the one I grew up with. I have a MOMO **** (RacAir) also, but will try the Hurst **** first.

One issue a lot of CF members have addressed is the added noise. I would like to know WHY there is this added noise................

Hurst does not dampen their shifter like the OEM shifter. Neither does Hurst have any plans to do so in the future. It is a trade off for short precision shifts. A 2" rubber PVC boot will fit nicely over the shifter base to help quiet some of the noise. Other things can also be done is you experience the dreaded Hurst rattle. The rattle is a driveline harmonic that travels through the shifter shaft and out the ****. The **** acts like a speaker that amplifies the noise. Do a search for the Hurst rattle to get more information.

The Hurst will loosen up after a while and feel even better. If you re-used the OEM **** your most likely going to have noise (rattles/buzzing). The only cure is a new ****. I tried several and the only brand that is 100% silent is the MGW line of *****.

But in any case enjoy the Hurst, it's the shifter we all grew up with.

No rattles with OEM.........yet, and will not get to see long term, as a white Hurst ball is on the way.

My Dad had a Hurst (1966 Olds 442) shifter, which came stock, on his brand new 1966 442. I got to use that car a lot, but was only 17 then.

I plan on uffling the "noise" with a tennis ball which someone suggested on another thread. I also remembering bashing this shifter pretty bad too.

Now look at me, I actually OWN one!

When I did this install, I went with the softest pair of springs, and to me, it still feels a bit stiff. Has anyone tried it with only one of the springs?
