I was cruising down a local street at about 35 MPH with the windows down Saturday afternoon. With my foot just slightly on the accelerator, all of the sudden I heard really loud BANG. At first I thought I hit something and the tire blew out. But that wasn't the case. The only other thing I can think of that would make a noise like that is an engine/exhaust backfire.
My exhaust "pops" and "burbbles" pretty much everytime I decellerate. It happens when my revs get bellow 2500-2000 rpms as I let the engine (rather than my brakes) slow the car down. I know that the sound isn't a "backfire". Is this a byproduct of running on the rich side? Why does it "burbble" during decelleration, does anyone know?
It could have been a backfire, but it also could have been what some people call the "oil canning" or "tennis ball" effect. On some Zs (mine included), the thin sheet metal that is behind the seats or that forms the gas tank makes a popping sound that is similar to the sound of a kid hitting your car with a tennis ball. It scared the crap out of me the first couple times I heard it. But it seems to be fairly common and was the subject of a couple threads a few months ago.
Mine will backfire once in a while. Technically an afterfire, through the exhaust. It usually happens if I'm decelerating, but then partially get on the throttle lightly again. Like feathering the throttle between accelerating and decelerating, it'll occassionally let out a louder than normal POP!
It's not super loud like a gunshot, but definitely noticeable to the point that passengers unfamiliar with the car will ask "what the hell was that?" It's also substantially louder than the usual popping and gurgling on deceleration.
It's perfectly normal for this car though to do that, as long as its not super loud like a gun shot, and doesn't happen often.

It has something to do with turbulence caused in the exhaust system by the H-pipe. Basically some unburned fuel is getting drawn from the cylinder on deceleration and is lighting off in the exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe. I've heard that if you replace the H-pipe with an aftermarket X-pipe, it will eliminate the popping and burbling on deceleration.

Yes, this was my experience exactly. I guess it's not all that uncommon.
i love that sound.. i try to do that when im going down hills. if i press the gas just a lil bit going down hill it will make that popping noise..
