Default Track Days

Anyone been to track days in Atlanta? Did you take extra wheels or run on one set for the weekend. If you ran street tires, how much rubber did you scrub during the weekend? How fast do you geton the track? Is it worth $500? Are there any known places open on Sunday there to swap tires for the drive home? :chevy

I have done RA many times and hear is what i can tell you...

road atlanta is in the top 5 driving tracks in the country.

IF you havent run RA before you need to do touring unless you have alot of experience and or dont mind wrecking your car...

AS far as tires go bring some tools and someone will have a jack you can borrow. I used to bring everything but my trailer ws stolen and i sold my truck so i am driving to RA.you can change the tires at teh track..

If you need any help feel free to come by the group my plate is xcler8 I am sure i will know 4-6 zo6 guys and many other guys at the event..

As far as is it worth it ? Well everyone I have convinced to do it has walked away witha smile.. Oh make sure you do the prep work to you z before you hit the track you can go over 140mph on the back straight if you want. Then you go down hill into the braking zone.(tough on brake pads)

Tire wear is subjective to how good you are and how hard you push. Some guys go out and the tires dont even wear others push and slide the crap out of the car and then the tires loose some tread.

you wont want to miiss a great track like RA.... " bring it to the track"

Do you generally have a second set of wheels/tires you run the track with?

I used to live in Smyrna when I was going to school in Marietta in 1989-1993. Wish I still lived in Atlanta somewhere.

Download the student handbook from the BMW CCA. They run some of the best track events in the business. It's a pretty complete guide for the first timer...

If this is your first time and it sounds like it is I wouldnt worry about your tires..

BAsics :

change oil
bleed brakes put in a good brake frluid high temp
check pads make sure you have at least half of pad left
check and torgue on lug nuts/ also air pressure on tires..

buy a good tire gage it will be very helpful at the track
take anything loose out of your car
pull drivers side floar mat

may want to do depending on when it was done last rear diff fluid and trany fluid.. I think this is a good start have fun..

thats a good start also if you want to meet a few of us we will be meeting at exit 111 85north at 600am cracker barrel for some smack talk and breakfast..

se ya at the track

Add the extra quart of oil and leave it in until the next change
Take a chair
Drink lots of H2O
Nibble throughout the day
Minimize shifting- very few, if any, turns need 2nd gear in these cars
Stay away from the rev limiter
Listen to your instructor
Relax
Enjoy yourself
You will be very pleasantly surprised at your improvenemt from day 1 to 2

:D

I see some cars that have what looks like tape at certain parts of the car (behind wheel wells). Is that a good idea....any comments on this...

I appreciate the remarks...even the funny ones, and helpful hints/suggestions. I have autocrossed before, but never been on a race track. I'm looking forward to it. I will be attending the 7/04 track days @ RA if anyone is interested in motoring (drive fast occasionally) down with me from Lexington KY.

Extra Oil (1 quart over) at the track is key. I burnt 2 quarts at VIR in a weekend!

Hey Ryan,
What is the touring class???? I also have done some autocross but never been on a track. I don't have extra tires etc., just my car, but it is new 1,000 miles.
I have two concerns:
1. I don't want to get out there and hamper anyone elses abilty to "go fast" because of my inexperience. Don't get me wrong I like to go fast, but doing Solo II I realized we often think we are better than we are, and I don't think I should be doing 140 anywhere my first time.
Thats why I asked about touring, sounds a little less abussive on the car and mabye a better place for a newbie. I know on a golf course people have little patience for newbies who slow down the game. One reason I dont like golf, no comaradery.

2. Is it smart to drive to an event with no real "extras" ie tires. A small problem could end up with an expensive tow home. Doe s that happen often???

Bottom line what the best way to get some experience before getting into the "deep end"

Gentleman, Ryan ain't bad for a viper driver....

If your tires are newer they should get you thru both days. Sat in the touring group for the first time guys will not cause that much tire wear at all. You can always rotate the fronts left to right after 2 sessions on sunday to reduce any excessive wear.

I don't know of any place to get tires mounted that is open on sunday in that area. Could be a place, but none that I know of.

I would highly recommend new pads if you are going to drive both days. Fronts and rears pads are important to watch, you will wear the rears out quick as well with the AH kicking in. The 02 and newer Z06 pads will work fine.

Flush with new brake fluid is a must as well. Get some http://www.speedbleeder.com that will make it easy. I have ran the ATE amber 200 fluid with never a problem. It can be found for as low as $8 a liter.
http://www.fcpgroton.com/SV90/sv90brakes.htm#fluid

You will need at least 2-3 liters for a full flush.

Gonzo, you will have to run touring your first day, then you can run B group on sunday. Have your brake fluid flushed and you will be fine with that new Z06.

I will be there sunday to run in A group. Ryan will be there both days. If you run into any problems on sat, just ask Ryan for help. He has my cell # if he can't handle it.

See you at the track!!

Here's my thoughts in a nut shell --> Lots of track time (practice makes you a better driver) and learn from others (ride with a faster driver and/or learn from a instructor). I have had 3 events at Road Atlanta. The touring event is slow but a nice intro to the track. It's basically follow the leader to learn the line all day.

My first HPDE that got me hooked was two years ago at RA. I drove my parents' '99 vert mn6 in the touring class. This was perfect for me as I'd never done anything like it before. You follow the leader all day and we were hitting 130 in the back straight!

Since then I've done three other HPDE weekends and the full Panoz school. It's addicting.
