What type jack is best for lifting up the car? My old jack does not have the clearance to get under there. I was going to put the new ceramic pads on this weekend but am on hold looking for a good jack.
Thanks,
Leo
Depending on how big your present jack is; the best way to lift the car with any jack is to drive the car up onto either wood blocks or car ramps, then jack it up.
I use a couple of pieces of 2x12 to drive up onto. That gives me enough clearance to get the jack under there. Others are using the $20 Rhino Ramps.
I just bought a low profile jack that will fit under the side of the car even using jacking pads. The height is only about 3 inches.
I prefer to have the right jack instead of messing with blocks and ramps.

I already had a good quality jack so I wasn't going to waste money just to buy the same quality jack that was lower so I drive my car up on a couple of 2x10's first. Works just fine. And when I want to get it real high, I use my 4 post lift.

How well does the low profile jack work when placed under the front and/or rear crossmember?
Thanks for the responses. My jack was a Walmart special my neighbor gave me after breaking my other jack. I checked out Harbor Freight and got a 3 inch clearance aluminum jack for $129. It has a max 17 inch lift.
I'll probably do the ramp thing later on but I want to get these brake pads on and see how much they cut down on the brake dust.
Thanks again!

I just changed my oil yesterday. I purchased the Harbor Freight jack also. Seems to work fine. Don't forget to put the bleeder plug in that came with it. It helps relieve trapped air. I heard the air bleed out after I lowered the jack.
I use the Norco 71230. Very solid jack and works great! Still have to drive up on wood blocks though (I use two, 3/4 inch pieces of plywood screwed together - one block longer than the other so it's super easy to drive up on).
