Default Mercedes E55 AMG Beware....

Played with one of these last weekend near Toronto, we where doing around 60 and it was no contest, but i did not pull away instantly as is generally the case with most of the performance vehicles i have played with..I was surprised as i thought these cars where overpriced overweight status symbles..I would think 0-60 or 70 these would be a hand full

WOW, I am surprised as you are S/C'd. (My numbers are quite similar to yours) I went with one a couple of months ago, and I did pull away from him very quickly. Did you have your cars revs up to where you were making your big hp numbers??? or were you below your power levels. I made sure I was in 3rd at around 4000 and I just left him standing still. I will agree, if the Z06 was stock, I don't think I would of had a big smile on my face.

I ran a new E55 at the drags in March 04. Both of us were bone stock on stock tires.

The E55 owner previously had owned and raced an 02 Z06 and is an experienced racer.

We lined up to the delight of the announcer and the crowd.

I got a good launch and so did he. But I pulled steadily on him including after the 660' in my fourth gear.

Results were:
02 Z06...11.88 @ 118
04 E55...12.20 @ 116

So to beat an E55, you need to bring your A-game.

As for the high-HP Z06s reports above, I doubt their E55 opponents were stock (perhaps a boost controller?), because I was pulling on the stock one I ran with just my bone-stock 353 rwhp.

04 E55...12.20 @ 116
I saw an E55 with some sort of aftermarket airbox run 12.2s @ 113 in cool weather @ ETown at the start of the season. He pulled 1.8 60' times.

On the same day I was running 2.0 60' times on the Eagle F1SC and I beat his ET and trapped with much more MPH.

The E55 was very impressive for such a large sedan.

I ran one a couple months back. It was quick for what it is, and I'm sure with 469hp it'll give a stock Z a good run, but I pulled a good 4 or 5 car lenghts by 120.

I had a run with an SL55 AMG a month or so ago from 50mph on the freeway (it was quiet). Through 100+ there was nothing in it. We gave each other the thumbs up and went on our way. Awesome car.

Hey guys, as a Mercedes owner I thought I’d chime in. The E55 AMG is no slow poke! And it only gets faster… A friend’s E55 runs mid to low 12’s in the quarter which is pretty typical of one of these things. But, I’ll have you notice that the E55 is rated for less power then it’s S class and SL class brethren. Mercedes claims that it is due to longer exhaust but I call bull sh*t. If an E class exhaust is longer than an S class, I might have to go back to elementary and learn how to count again. It’s really a wonderfully deployed marketing trick to keep the S class customers and their $120K+ purchases, happy. So here’s the scoop, and something to watch out for. The E55 is fitted with a smaller air snorkel on the left side than the right. This is not the case for the SL or S. So leave it to educated consumer to go order an air snorkel for an S55 and stick it on your E55 and viola, instant gratification. The modification takes about 10 seconds plus the time to get the part from your dealer and costs exactly $7.95. So here’s the run made with the “Stupid is as stupid does air snorkel modification:

60' - 1.77
1/8 - 7.724 @ 90.93
1/4 - 11.986 @ 115.80
hallsville dragway hallsville texas 2/7/04

Certainly not slow by any means of the imagination mind you all of this with an automatic transmission and the only skill required for launch is to floor the beast when the light turns green. Everything else is magically taken care of by the traction control. The E55 actually starts to break away from the SL once 145mph rolls on bye. But SL owners don’t fret! There’s still the SL600 and SL65 AMG, the latter making 600 or so horsepower and nearly 750ft/lbs of torque.

Anyhow, thought all this stuff about the snorkel was neato if anyone wanted to hear about it. Keep up the friendly drag racing and let’s keep seeing those slips!!

Is that your car! Nice run. Hard to beat an automatic with traction control like that, the race is often over at the start.

Here, from another forum, is the post by the owner of the 04 E55 I made the 11.88 pass against. He previously owned and raced a Z06 (see his sig below).

"[Ranger,] Yeah, that was a great run and you really dug deep to get that e.t. I was really suprised how hard your car pulled once you hit 4th gear...you really walked away. My 60' had a little to be desired on that pass with a 1.94 vs my best of a 1.84 earlier. It wouldn't have mattered you would have still beat me. Nice to see you at the track and congrats on the great running stock Z06 and the superhuman driving techniques. My E55 needs to go on a diet or some extra hp to compete with your car. If you run your drag radials, I'll need jet propulsion. Drag radials are my next mod and that should get me 11.9x-12.0x. Hope to see you again at the track."

Hey sorry guys (CAPN17), I didn’t mean to come off as a troll if I sounded like that. Just thought you guys might want to hear what the Mercedes was capable of. It’s still not as fast in the quarter as a lot of Z06 slips that I’ve been seeing around here. However, for a 4 door luxury sedan, it’s pretty awe inspiring. I must admit that I’m a Mercedes Die-hard fanatic through and through so I get overzealous when I talk about them but I had no intention of picking a fight with anyone. I actually highly admire the your guy’s cars… Why else would I be hanging around and reading the Corvette forum? I was thinking of purchasing one a while back but decided I needed a 4 door sedan. Utility is still utility these days even if I wanted a sports car.

To answer the above question, no, it wasn’t my car. I didn’t make it clear but it was my friends. The same guy who was running mid to low 12’s previously. I need to make sure that he gets the credit for that one and not me! My car is from a previous era but for it’s day it was something to talk about. It’s what I like to call my “go fast enough machine. LOL. My real go fast machine is my motorcycle and not even it is the cream of the crop but faster than most and rather deceiving (no doubt my favorite attribute.) If I ever found myself in battle with a stupendously fast Z06, it’s my motorcycle, not my car I would want to be holding on to.

Yes, 1000 lbs heavier than your Z06. They have the S/C torque but try doing some auto-x with that car.

I've seen one of these run at a road course called Thunderhill out here in CA. The car was absolutely amazing to watch. I mean for such a heavy car it didn't plow through the corners or during braking. Didn't seem to have a lot of body roll, I mean you could see it but it wasn't what you would expect from a car this size. Very impressive on the straights too!

In the August 2003 Road and Track the testers state that, "... the E55
AMG can almost keep up with the Dodge Viper SRT-10, and for sure
can outrun a Corvette Z06 without breaking a sweat." Bad news for me
because I'm bone stock, but maybe not for too much longer.
