Default Blackwing on the 04Z

I had a Blackwing on my cp and it worked well with no relearn or any codes. It even sounded better. Want to put one on the Z. Has anyone had any kind of problems install wise or afterwards ? I have heard The Z's, especially the 04's are sensitive to changes. Let me know. Thanks, Skip

Some folks have reported engine surging when using the Blackwing. I *think* it was from people who also cut the radiator shroud to get cold, pressurized air from below, but I'm not sure.

I don't think there was any correlation between year of car and surging. There weren't many posts reporting surging either, only a few, and it may just take time for the PCM to learn that it has more air than it's used to getting.

You shouldnt have any problems... It will make the intake louder and a bit more flow over stock.

Thanks for the replys. I am looking for actual experiences from 04Z owners or tuners who may or may not have had any problems. I really like how the Blackwing sounds on our C5's.

No problems for me. And I replaced the air bridge and coupler too.

I don't have a Blackwing but I had problems with a Halltech Stinger. After a week, the setup kept throwing lean codes on both banks. According to Jim hall, '03 and '04 Zs are factory tuned leaner than for previous years. This can throw codes in some cars when more air is introduced. The only fix is a tune.

I had to go back to stock to elliminate the codes. I'll have to fork over the cash for a tune if I want to use the Stinger.

My '04 Z06 has had no problems with the Blackwing.....................5,000 miles, although I think I lost some bottom end (by the feel in the SOP).....

The Blackwing seems to make my traction control activate more often. I replaced the bellows with a neoprine coupler to the intake manifold. No problems. It's nice when you can feel the HP rather than just read it on the box. [IMG][/IMG] :flag

Jax, what year Z and any tuning done on your car ?? I just want to put the Blackwing on, I know they work well. I never had any problem with my 98. I am not near any tuners so it is not worth it if people are getting codes from a blackwing install. Thanks Skip

My 04 with blackwing and carbon fiber airbridge was throwing lean codes right left bank, hasn't done it now for about 500 miles. hopefully it won't throw them again.

No tune, just the install. I did the cold air schroud with it. It's all about how many air molecules can get in. The less restrictive the intake, and the colder the air, the more HP. From what I understand, the stock computer "Learns" when something like that changes. Mine is a 2001 Z06. If I were to buy another C5 or Z06, it would get another Blackwing within a day or two!

I had the exact same thing as mmorse happen on my 04 Z, with the Halltech Stinger. It was fine for about 150 miles and than all the sudden I got a check engine light yesterday. I checked the codes which indicated lean banks 1 and 2. I believe the codes were 0171 and 0174 if memory serves me correctly. Sounds like the 04 Zs are definitely tuned leaner. This was not a one time fluke, I cleared the codes 3 times and took the car for a ride, and within a quarter mile or so the check engine light came on. I put my stock intake back on, and presto no more check engine light. Not wanting to run the risk of burned pistons or other problems, I'm leaving the stock intake on until I can get the car tuned for the increased airflow. I'd say you might have the same problem with a blackwing, I guess there's only one way to find out. Good luck!

Yes, It seems like the newer cars come tuned pretty lean then. So you put more cool air in and get a lean code. G.M. has these things tuned pretty close so people can't mess with them. I would love to get someone like Cartech to work on the car. It is more the travel and time investment than money. I hate to mess with something thats running good. Thanks, Skip
