I'm sure that this has been covered before but I am really feeling lazy right now and so I figured I'd just make a new post. What does everyone feel the best break-in time and procedure is? I have 680 miles on my Z06 and between 450 and 680 miles have redlined the car at least 15 times (probably 10+ tonight giving my siblings rides ). I'm sure this is fine but if this is going to be damaging the engine at all or making it so it will pull less hp in the future then I'll stop now until whatever mileage is best (although its damn hard not to mash the pedal every time I'm in the car!). I figured since the manual said 500 miles that should be fine, and then at 1000 I was planning on doing the first oil change.
Just wanted to hear everyone's thoughts and opinions on the subject, thanks!
Been a lot of threads on this. "break-in" is supposed to be 500 miles, and sounds like you are over that, so no worries.
I ignored the 55mph part completely, but didn't race to redline. No problems so far. I still have to hit the dyno so I can have a nice baseline to work from.
Sounds like your car is already broke in. Don't change your oil at 1,000 miles, follow the owners manual suggestions when it says to watch your DIC lifetime oil monitor. It is much more accurate than old wives tales concerning this.
The break-in is mainly for the drivetrain. No WOT or over 55 MPH for 500 miles. After that you can drive harder. I have read that the LS1/6 can take up to 7000 miles to be fully seated. IME 2500 miles. You might want to change the oil and filter at 1000 miles.
When you say Chevy, who do you mean? The dealership, sales person or the manufacture? It makes a difference because, dealerships and sales people don't know squat about this car.

You've got that right Shylor
I've taken my Z06 to the road course for 10 track days since I bought it at the end of February 2004. I think the engine is now broken-in and the rings well seated after 4447 miles. Over the weekend I ran at Pocono for 3 days and it did NOT use any oil over that 3 day period. Up till then it was consuming about 1/2 quart of oil for each day of on track driving, but did not consume oil in regular driving.
I was very careful not to rev the engine to 6000 rpm until it had about 1000 miles on it, and also during the first 1000 miles the other mechanical parts of the car were being broken in. After that I have used the full range of available power in all gears and I can report that there are NO oil leaks, NO oil consumption, and it runs very strongly on the track.
If you break it in with some good old common sense and don't abuse it in the early miles, I think you'll get excellent power and service from your car in the long run.
When my car was delivered, they (chevy) said there was NO break in period, except for not maintaining a constant speed for the first 500 miles.
More proof that this is bad information is the part about maintaining a constant speed for the first 500 miles. If you look in the owners manual it says to vary the speed.
