I had a new die that cost $10 and I did not think was cheap, but apparently the "RE-threading" die I got was only good for chasing threads, not cutting new threads. I ordered a $23 die, and was able to thread the shaft with no problem.

For me the factory shifter worked fine. It was just a little too tall. With the shaft shortened about 1-1/4", and a Hurst classic round shifter ball on top, it is now the perfect height for me.

I am still curious how much shorter the shifts are with the Hurst shifter, but I am not sure I want to sacrifice the vibration damping and ease of shifting of the stock shifter.
Which die did you order?

I can't believe someone resurrected this message from last June!
I just made sure I ordered the standard 9/16" -18 die that was good quality. The cheaper die just would not cut the shaft.
I have since pulled the stock shifter out anyway and gone with the Hurst. The Hurst is so much more precise shifting that I will probably never go back to the stock shifter.

I thought that the thread on the shifter handle was 18mm x 1.5 pitch?

NOPE, I think that is an F-body. I had a Camaro SS and I think the threads were metric

Who sells high quality dies. I tried Sears and they didn't have that size.

You're right. Most die sets do not go that large.
You will have to go to an industrial supply house where you can buy individual dies, or order one on-line. Make sure you get one designed to cut new threads and not just to chase threads.
