A head and cam package only affect the heads and cam and not the block or it's internals. I would suggest getting some books on engine tuning and doing your research before making a decision.
True, good point, it wouldn't affect the pistons. I'm assuming the issue is just the ring around the piston. But wouldn't it be easy to change the rings with the heads off?
I'm not sure what you mean by getting books on engine tuning... I wouldn't be doing any engine tuning, my question was simply based on the '01 pinston/ring/oil issue.
What I'm saying about educating yourself on engine building and tuning is it would answer your question and give you a base of knowledge to ask more detailed questions. To remove a piston from any engine you have to take off the oil pan, unbolt the connecting rods and remove the pistons; a process I prefer to do with an engine out of the car and on an engine stand. I’m not sure how the dealers are doing it when an ’01 gets a ring job.
Gotcha, I didn't realize you had to pull the pistons that way, I assumed when the heads were off that the pistons were visable. I've played with engines and mods for about 15 years but have never pulled any heads off. Thanks again for the advice.....
I watched the dealer do my re-ring. They go from below through the oil pan. They only replace the oil rings, and they didnt give me any new rod bearings!!!!
I was told by a well known tuner here on the forum , not the one who did my work, that part of the problem with oil blow-by was a result of the cam specs and changing the cam specs has improved oil consumption on their cars??.
