Default 0il problem with LS6

I've got about 6000 miles on my 03-Z06 and it consumes one quart of Mobil One 05w30 about every 1000 miles. My driving habits lean to the performance side but they are not abusive. Is this ok or is there a problem?thanks for the help. Gary

I'm surprised to hear this on a non-01 Z06. I drive my 03 Z06 in the higher rpm band and have not used a drop in the first 5,000 miles. I'm sure Chevy will say you don't have a problem, but I find this very unusual.

Yeah, I would say thats excessive oil consumption, unless you ran 1,000 solid high speed road racing miles, then its OK. But if its street miles, even hard driven miles, that's too much oil burning.

Have it checked out by the dealer.

Goose, give me a call. Certain driving habits cause a vacuum condition that results in oil consumption. I want to ask you a few questions and see if this is could be happening to you. Joe.

Not normal at all. Visit your favorite dealer soon. Stupid me, don't think anyone has a favorite dealer.

The '01's had PCV and ring problems... yours has the updated rings so I'm leaning towards it being the PCV. The general concesus is that excessive oil consumption on '02+ cars is the PCV. There's a seal it there that can be defetive and cause oil to be sucked it. All they have to do is pop off the manifold and replace it w/ a new one.

as said-IMHO,, GM will say its no big deal-i get about 1200-1500 mi /qt on my 01,if i drive it hard its on the 1200 mi side, easy its around 1500 mi they said don't worry-whats a few qts over a yrs driving-check it over 4-5k mi -if its consistently 1000 / qt or gets worse then ya might have a prob that they will fix..just some advice..if its a little loose on the oil use-its gotta be faster :flag

I also have an '02 that drinks about a quart every 1000 miles. What is the procedure for fixing the PCV seal?

Like everyone else, I hate to take my cars to the dealer. If this is something fairly simple, I will fix it myself.

I would rather have to add oil once in a while, than take my car to the dealer and have those morons scratch it up.

Please advise,

Chris

Seal solution works like crp. The problem will occur again and again. Must get a catch can system, unless you drive your vette like a Honda.

I too would agree it seeems excessive. I have an 03 with righ at 4,000 miles and it has not used any and the oil look clean and new. Might go ask dealer to a look and see what they say. Good Luck

99%(A guess) of dealers have no clue. The service bulletin says to replace the gasket. It does not work. Three motors later and having this problem occur to me on four occasions I know more than I want to know about it. It is an engineering flaw with the motor, that can only be fixed with a catch can solution or something similar.

Well... in my case and many many other people the motor isn't "flawed" from an egineering standpoint. The majoirty of Vettes don't burn oil, and the re-ring/valley pcv seal replacement fixed my car completely. I beat the crap out of it and it has stopped burniing. Since my last oil change 6000 miles ago I have run at VIR twice, run four auto-x's, and run the 1/4 on two test n' tunes. I've added a total of 1 quart and that was for the overfill at VIR... that is all.

Cool. If it works don't fix it, but I would keep cheking on it.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=851491

By the way, I had one motor with 01 pistons/rings changed with 02 pistons/rings. In my opinion, the factory cast pistons/ and wimpee rings suck(and blow). I would get what you can out them though.

Man this is becoming more and more of a topic with the LS6. There is a replacement orifice style PCV valve (really isn't a vavle , no check valve in it, just and 1/64" orifice) that may help. I'm testing one now. G.M. part # 12572717

I looked behind my throttle body and found some oil. Is there some kind of and air/oil separator that could be installed prior to the PCV hose entering the intake manifold? I don't have an oil consumption problem, but oil, no matter how little, in the intake is not a great idea.

Why do people get **** about any motor using a qt. every 1000/1500 miles? Big deal it shows a good motor that wants a fresh qt. once in awhile! Aloose motor throws out more power than a tight one!!

No problem with a loose motor using some oil, but I don't think oil leaking into the intake is going to make more power. If anything, it will do the opposite.

Default LS6 Oil behind throttle body

I just talked to the Service MGR at Chevy, and he is ordering a valley cover & related parts for my 01 Z06. He said they did not want to re-ring for now, as the oil consumption is not excessive. I would prefer not to re-ring either. A quart of oil every 1000 to 1500 miles is fine with me. I just don't want oil being sucked into my intake manifold. If there is a catch can for sale, I am a probable buyer!

Default Mobile 1 syn oil

I have only had my new Z16 for a week so I can't comment about my LS6 oil consumption yet, however I have used Mobile one synthetic in my Avalanche, and I noticed much higher oil consumption with it. I used a qt every 1500 mi with Mobile one Synthetic consistantly, and 1 qt every 3000 mi with reg oil.
