Re: Best Shifter (LuS1fer)
I have not yet made this purchase for my car, but had a very interesting conversation with Nate from Corvette Garage over this issue. He has a very nice Speedway White 01 Z06 with a B&M ripper in it.
I mentioned to him that the Hurst seemed to be the most popular shifter for the Z and he told me that it had been, but that he thought that the new model ripper was going to gain popularity quickly. He said that B&M put their shifter out first for the C5 and then the others followed. Apparently, they made improvements over the ripper that made theirs a better unit. But...he said that recently B&M has responded by putting out a new unit which is far superior to the others and he said it is hands down the best shifter for the C5. This from a guy who sells them all and has no vested interest in the ripper...that is, other than choosing it for his own personal ride.
I hope to do a shifter soon and it will definitely be the B&M. After trying out his, I am sold...nice, nice, nice!
This question must come up on the forum 1000 times. Using the search function will give you many answers.
Most high performance shifters have driveline noise. The Hurst is the most known for it but, I think is still the most popular. There are many forum member fixes to reduce or eliminate these noises, so they aren't that big a deal. I have a Hurst and love it.
Look for the best deal...they will all work well. Hurst will get the votes b/c it's popular. I have it...I luv it...I will probably try another brand in the future too though.
How does the BP shifter stack up in terms of quality? I like the mult-adjustability of this stick, but it's relatively pricey. I always read about how nice but noisey the Hurst is, but my problem - aside from the clunkiness stock shifter - is hitting my elbow on the console when I'm shifting. I'm tired of having to reposition my arm all the time. Thanks....

I run the BP unit. The build quality is top notch. Nothing has come loose. No vibration. No more tranny noise that the other shifters. Installation is no more complex that the other shifters. Very precise and short throws.
