questions about powdercoating wheels
where?
how much weight am i going to be adding?
how long for it to be done?
do they need to take the tire of the wheel?
how much approximatley?
I was thinking about doing this myself and found a post in the wheel/tire section that said the heat would weaken the wheel a little bit, which shouldn't be a problem for street use, but could cause problems if you are using race rubber on a track. because of that and a few other reasons, i've decided to just get a 2nd set of wheels.
Everything has to be removed from the piece- any plastic, bearings, etc..
It has to be grease/oil free. It will also need to be blasted, usually with soad or sugar, it is not as harsh and will not pit like sand. The shop will usually prep, bake, clean again, then begin the process. Be sure to explain what areas you want taped off, because that stuff is a biayotch to get off.
Be sure to use a shop that guarantees their work, and has plenty of pics or pieces to check out.
Then hover over your wheel shop as they install your custom shoes and warn them at least a dozen times not to scratch them
1)I think the center cap is plastic so you will have to get that painted to match afterwards.
2)I was quoted 60-65 per wheel from two different shops for all powdercoating (no polished lip)
3)If you choose, and extra $25 to put a clear coat over the color coat to help prolong nice finish.
4)Time frame various with each shop, but they said about a week total.
After all that, I might keep my stockers for the track and get a black set of motorsports for the street.
Good Luck
