Well I want to do my own oil changes etc. to my 01, but there is no way that I can squeeze my fat 220 lb body under the car - maybe too many

So one option is to lift it, but I would feel safer with ramps. Any suggestions on which ramps to get?

Oh and I commend those people that built their own, but I am not getting under a heavy car with anything that I built...

thanks

Rhino ramps has a set that is low profile that will work for a vette. Got mine at walmart. However, there is still not much room to get under the car.

From what I understand, you can't change the oil yourself just by using ramps. The oil pan is too flat to do that.

Do a search under Tech Tips for a detailed description of changing the oil yourself. I think you'll see what I mean.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: BTW, you still need a good set of ramps for routine things like cleaning under the radiator shroud which, you will find, is like a vacuum cleaner for the street. Sucks up all kinds of trash. Rhino ramps come in different slopes. Get the ones that have the Corvette (and a truck?) on the packaging. Got mine at Wally World for about $15 each. They work great.

I change my oil without any problems. I use the 12k Rhino ramps. As was mentioned Wal Mart sells them, as well as Auto Zone and others. I then lift the rear of the car so it is slightly higher than the front. I use jack stands to support the rear. This way oil will drain properly. You won't have a problem. And no dealer installed scraches, scuffs, or grease on your interior!!!

Good Luck.

OK I am 6' and 240 and here is how I did mine.

Back up on a set of Rhino ramps. Using floor jack I jacked up the front and placed my other set of Rhino ramps under the front wheels.

It is a tight fit but if you do it fron the drivers side you can do the filter and the drain plug without any problem.

well alittle more work than expected to change the oil (raising front and back of car), but nothing too complicated.

I have a floor jack and stands already so I will be heading out this weekend to get the ramps.

thanks for the advice

Bob:

After you lower your car (and you will lower your car), you'll
need to be a little creative with lifting.

First, get yourself 4 good jack stand, one set of Rhinoe ramps (gray ones) an aluminum racing jack and four, 18" cuts of 2x12 boards
and don't forget the pucks.

Pep Boys has a sale on the aluminum jack and ramps. Drive up one th boards and either jack up or drive up on the ramps.

Or better yet, invest now and buy a Qwik-Lift. (Do a search)
Convince you wife it's a safety issue.

Although I crawl around under my car for everything, for oil changes
I just drive down to my local corner lube shop with my 6.5 quarts of
oil, filter and drive over their in-ground shop. No lifting and is level.

I can't be bothered disposing of the oil and making a mess in the garage. But that's just me.

The Rhino Ramps work well. About $30 from most auto parts stores.

Another option is one of the units that sucks the oil out of the dipstick, has anyone tried one of these??
