Default CD Changer Problems

I have the vette at the dealer right now because the cd changer doesn't play CDRs. They are trying to tell me that it is not designed to play them. Unfortunately my owners manual is with the car. Can anyone check and see if there is anything in there about this?

Thanks

I had the same problem with mine. A CD-R plays in my in-dash player but not in the 12 disc changer. Nothing in the book

From reading several threads here it seems that some work and other do not. Mine worked the first time I loaded it and then when I changed a couple of the cds it revused to play all but one.

Annoying.

I found an online manual and it does mention the CDR saying that it may be scratchy etc. So if it's in the book it is designed to play and should.

Insert a CD partway into the slot, label side up.
The player will pull it in. The CD should begin playing.
CD and the CD symbol will appear on the display. If you
want to insert a CD with the ignition off, first press the
EJECT or the RECALL button.
If you turn off the ignition or radio with a CD in the
player, it will stay in the player. When you turn on the
ignition or radio, the CD will start playing where it
stopped, if it was the last selected audio source.
As each new track starts to play the track number will
appear on the display.
The CD player can play the smaller 8 cm single CDs
with an adapter ring. Full-size CDs and the smaller CDs
are loaded in the same manner.
If playing a CD-R the sound quality may be reduced
due to CD-R quality, the method of recording, the quality
of the music that has been recorded, and the way the
CD-R has been handled. You may experience an
increase in skipping, difficulty in finding tracks, and/or
difficulty in loading and ejecting. If these problems occur
try a known good CD.
Do not add paper labels to CDs, they could get caught
in the CD player.
Do not play 3 inch CDs without a standard adapter CD.
If an error appears on the display, see “CD Messages
later in this section.
1 PREV (Previous): Press this pushbutton to go to
the start of the current track if it has been playing
for more than eight seconds. If you hold this pushbutton
or press it more than once, the player will continue
moving backward through the CD.
2 RDM (Random): Press this pushbutton to hear the
tracks in random, rather than sequential, order.
RANDOM will appear on the display. Press this
pushbutton again to turn off random play.
3 NEXT: Press this pushbutton to go to the next track.
If you hold this pushbutton or press it more than once,
the player will continue moving forward through the CD.
REV 4 (Reverse): Press and hold this pushbutton to
quickly reverse within a track. Release it to play
the passage. The elapsed time of the track will appear
on the display.

Unfortunately, the electronics industry and the music industry have not gotten together on this topic. As you know, there are CDR-R, CDR+R, and a host of other formats. Not all recorders and players are the same. A CDR-R that you record on your recording device MAY or MAY NOT play in various other CD players. That being said ... it MAY be possible for your CD changer to play a CD-R ... but it may NOT play ALL CD-R's ... depending on the equipment used to make the recording.

Clear as mud?

My CD changer playes CDRs better than the dash mounted cd player. It was a dealer installed option.

Just curious, where are the factory-installed CD changers mounted. the dealer installed mine on a very nice looking "shelf" in the center storage bin in the trunk. As such, it sits parallel with the ground. I had horrible problems until the dealer replaced with with a new "delco" brand changer.

I know that convertibles with factory installed changers get mounted to the "wall" of the storage component so that they sit perpendicular to the ground.

Thanks.

I had a problem with the cdr's skipping in the cd changer. I put the original cds in the car changer and kept the cdrs for the home stero. Workd fine now.

Its a creap shoot here.
My CD-R's play fine my my Toyota and my Chevy Surburban.
In my 2004 C5 12 disc only about 75% seem to play.
Can't figure it out either.
Every manual seems to say it may not work with home recorded discs, but this is the first time in teh Vette I have had any problems.

I went through this. I played them on my home player fine. Wife's car's player, fine. Corvette's in-dash player, fine. 12 disc CD changer, scratchy or not at all.

I took the cartridge out and into the dealer's. And asked the salesman if I could try the cartridge in a Corvette on the floor. Amazingly they all played perfectly. Tried another Vette again they all played. Then we went out and put it into my Vette and nothing but crap. They replaced my changer. Now it works fine and haven't had a problem since. You might want to try your cartridge in another player. Hope it works for you too.

Keep us posted. It would be great if this worked for you.

My changer is real sensitive to CDR's in that the scratchy ones just don't play worth cr*p. However, they seem to be ok in the single disc unit in the dash. Go figure.

No problems here. Burned 12 discs on cheapest CDRs I had, all worked perfectly. Try a new brand of Discs.

I also found that the trick is to use the CHEAP cd's! Bought a box of High Speed blanks, and they work only on the computer's cd, and not my Vette, DTS, home player etc. BUT, record on the el cheapos, (32 or 48 max) and everything works. Go figure!

I've been having the same problem mostly in the factory installed 12 disc changer. I have music on all types and quality CDRs, and there doesn't seem to be a trend on what brand/quality it will play. Maybe it's the recording device used, unfortunately, I can't really trace every cd back to where it was recorded so who knows if this theory holds. I am just gonna try re-recording some of these cds on my burner, using cheap and quality cds, and see if I can establish a trend. If it's inconclusive, I'll try my brother's burner and repeat. I will also try using my brother's tray, since he also has a factory installed 12 disc in his 98 Z28. If I can draw any conclusions, I will post the results. Unless someone has already tried some of these things, then let me know so I can avoid the trouble.

This topic has come up a time or two, and one thing that hasn't been mentioned is the speed of recording. If you get much above 4x on your computer, the quality of the playback from the factory changer drops or is non-existant.

I didn't know recording speed had that much impact on the quality of the playback.

Like others have said, my CD-Rs (Memorex, if I recall correctly) work fine in my girlfriend's Sonada, in my Sport Trac, in the cheapy stereo on my deck, but not in my 04 coupe.

Must try the el cheapo method.

BTW, noticed something else about the CD changer. I just finished a long trip (5 hour drive) and my CDs (not CD-Rs, the real CDs) started to sound very fuzzy after a couple of hours. At a rest stop, I pulled the cover off of the center storage area (where the CD Changer is located) and the temp was HOT in that compartment. That's where I also store my car cover when not in use (such as when I'm driving).

Has anyone else noticed this compartment getting way too warm and impacting their CD sound quality?
