Default Door Panel Coming Apart-Help!

Just bought a 97 coupe. 30k even. The door panel covering's glue has weakened and the covering is separating from the door panel. Mainly happening at the armrest bends and the center of the panel. I do not know what to do: try and buy new panels or fix it. If I fix it, anyone know how?

I am starting to have the same problem. I'm just going to replace mine. At least I know it's done right and new. Plus it's a vette why not have the best parts.

Not sure you can fix the separation problem other than buying a new panel. If it were me, I would go the new route.

At the arm rest mine is doing the same.
It is not covered by GMPP extended warranty.

Why I was responding was with an idea I am scared to try. The door panel is styrofoam backed.

Could one inject glue through the styro to the door panel for a perfect repair?

Else one could purchase arm rest pads.

Gene at Karshop gets some nice clean ones from time to time. Might try him or else check on e-bay. Seems like I saw some on there the other day. HTH

vetteessentials.com sells armrests. Which is a good mod anyway because it you drive long distances you'll find that your elbows take a beating. First car that I have ever experienced that. But then again it's probably the first car that I have ever used the armrests that extensively. And as far as injecting some glue I'd say you have nothing to loose at this point. And it's a great idea. Just experiment first on something else so that when you do it you'll know it's going to work. It certainly sounds like it should. Unless the foam is deteriorating and will eventually fall apart again. But if you get a good glue that will soak into the foam and solidify you would think that it should be good.

Keep us posted. This is starting to come up quite a bit lately and you might be onto something we could all utilize when it happens to us. There might be others here that could come up with a good glue that would do the trick.

Good luck!! And let us know how it goes. Where there's a will there's a way.

The styrofoam is only held on by spot glue. Don't be afraid to yank it out of there. And if it breaks, so what? Glue it back in... Anyway, you'll find the plastic backing behind the armrest area has holes in it, so if you had a syringe with glue you could do a little experimentation here. Are there any woodworking shops in your area? Many shops that do veneers have a vacuum process for gluing the veneer to the base wood, and I bet they would be glad to help with the odd shape of the door panel. It's like a vacuum food sealer, only on a grand scale. The whole panel can fit inside the vacuum bag after gluing, then the cover could be sucked right into place in the deep bends.

Interesting post!!! What exactly is spot glue? Would it be a contact cement? If not what kind of glue should be used it the foam is deteriorating. TIA
