Does anyone know why GM replaces the standard CD player, with a cassette player, when you factory order the CD Changer? I don't own a single Cassette. Maybe they were trying to get rid of them.
Can the Cassette player just be replaced with the standard CD player, and control with CD Changer, leaving all cables and connections the same?
What is the GM part number for the CD player or can anyone suggest a place to purchase a slight used one?
Thanks.

A cassette player with the CD Changer is one of the nicest thing GM can do for you short of puting an audio jack on the head unit, which it seems almost no one does anymore. It is the best way to hook up your XM/Sirrius, MP3 player, or whatever other audio device you might have. The FM modulators for the XM/Sirrius stink in comparison with the cassette adaptor and most mp3 player do not have modulators.
changing to a CD unit, you will lose the #2 button [program] feature that controls the CD changer advancing from disc to disc. The CD player has [random] on #2 button that will randomly switch the discs in the changer which is a pain.

Look on the bright side - with the Cassette & 12 disc combo, a perp peering into your car won't want to steal your stereo. A cassette deck is the ulimate theft deterrent, because who wants to go through the trouble of dealing in stolen parts to get a cassette player?
And you still get to listen to CDs thanks to the out of sight out of mind 12 disc changer.
I have my home casette player hook up yo my entertainment center. If I know I'm going on a road trip I tape the local sport talk radio station just to have a little change of pace going down the road. it works until I get XM
get the xm, you'll LOVE it. my b/f just put a terk xm commander in our c5 and it's soooo nice to have (we already had it in our z71 suburban).
anyway, for those that wanna do this and don't wanna use a sucky fm modulator... there's a company, pie i think that makes an adaptor that plugs in between the cd changer cable and the head unit. it gives you 3 switchable "aux" inputs with rca connections.
BadAttitude, my b/f, used this to do ours. now we have:
1) cd head unit in front
2) cd changer in rear
3) xm commander in front
4) two additional rca aux inputs that i use to plug in my iPod, etc

Its just a transition option. lots of folks have large cassette collections and need a way to play them. You could still get a factory 8-track up into the late 70's GM's.
I swapped out my cassette for a CD right after I brought it home. I bought it from a corvetteforum member, who removed it from his 03. Check out the for sale/wanted forum. Post a WTB. Lots of folks take out the factory in dash CD for aftermarket. Its the same head unit, the in-dash CD head unit will control the changer, even if the donor didn't have a changer in his car.
I sold all my remaing cassettes at a yard sale a couple years ago. I'd rather have cd's now.
I like the audio books for Interstate travel too. The miles melt away. Books on CD are easy to find and getting easier.
