not all the time. i have problems getting into reverse. sometimes it will be in fifth (i am guessing) and it will make a grinding type of sound. also i noticed that if i am accelerating and go into fifth it will grind some times??? the car only has 6k miles on it. what the heck is going on?
Could be lots things. I'd suggest going into any other gear before going into reverse, that should eliminate the grinding (assuming your car is still when engaging reverse.)
FWIW, I had my clutch replaced under warranty and had problems getting into reverse before (no grinding, just had to fight with it.) Much easier with the new (good) clutch. May not be disengaging properly.
You shouldn't have grinding going into 5th gear---worn synchros perhaps??
I've noticed mine on occasion does not shift fully into reverse until I enagage the clutch a bit and maintain pressure on the shifter. Then it slips in. *dunno*
Most cars don't have synchros on the reverse gears to aid in lining up the gear teeth when engaging. If they don't mesh and both the input and output shaft teeth don't line up then slightly engaging the clutch will turn them a little and aid in 'stabbing it.' That is normal.
Except the Z06 has a syncro on reverse. You may have a problem with the fork. Others on the forum have noted that the forks supplied by the General are weak and tend to bend when they should not. I would suggest having a Vette certified trans tech take a look at it before you end up with a lock up.
I had a similar prob with third gear. My Z06 had only 7K miles on it. It was a bent shift fork. GM has put out a TSB on this. They need to replace the aluminum part with a steel one. Unfortunately, the repair took 2 weks and they had to replace a slew of parts in the tranny including 2 synchros and 2 bearing assemblies ( all under warranty).
Bring it into the dealer. I hope they don't give you a Daewoo for a service loaner, like I got.

HAd 3rd syncros go in mine. Reverse has always been cluncky, but after the warenty work, it was almost inpossible Put a hurst in it and it was gone. Still when cold it needs a little TLC and 4th 1st sometimes. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Describes mine exactly. If I don't maintain the pressure, it will "partly" pop back out and grind. Great for impressing everyone within earshot...

That's what happened to me; before I bent the shift fork I could engage the clutch, start the car, and go into reverse. After I bent it, I had to double clutch to get into reverse. You may have a bent shift fork. Do you recall ever shifting into 5th hard and fast and maybe the shift didn't feel right?
I got a new tranny, not a rebuilt one, under warrenty.

My 01 steadily deteriorated. It started getting hard to shift into reverse and would occasionally slip out when not fully engaged. Just before my 3 year warranty ran out, I had the reverse syncros replaces. Now it shifts like new again (29,000 miles).
Mine has no problems with going into or out of any gear. I've heard that one of the Z06 forks is Aluminum instead of steel and can be bent. However, I don't think it is the one for reverse.
