Default Mag Red Repaint??

Just wondering if anyone had to repaint a portion of their mag red II paint and how well it matched with the original. I am wanting to glass in some rear brake ducts but I'm leary about the paint match after repainting the rocker panel. With the oem paint being the three stage system (clear tint) and the aftermarket paint system is only a two stage, I wonder how close they are. I've used the two stage to paint all the engine compartment stuff like fuel rail covers, etc. but its hard to really see if the paint is a good match to an actual exterior adjacent panel oem color.

I have heard that Mag Red can be a challenge to match, but a good body shop should be able to do it. Hopefully someone that has a Mag Red car and has had it repainted can confirm.

My '99 Mag Red 1 required painting for the Motor City CF hood I installed after the 427 conversion.

In addition I had a number of 'chips' on the front facia and headlight covers, so this was a good time to take care of all of these areas.

I spent a lot of time meeting, and discussing, with various local painters the options and possible 'non- matching' issues that could occur.

Each painter had a number of opinions, but all told the same story - they would:

-blend the painted areas into other areas that were not affected, and

-do the three (3) stage process as if this were not done I would be dissatisfied with the results.

Eventualy I uses Stewarts (in the DFW area). I have had most people tell me that after looking at the painted areas and the rest of the Vert they cannot tell where it was painted.

To day the least I am completely satisfied.

Recommendations - talk to others in your area for recommendations of a painter that has a good ' track record'.

DO NOT go to the lowest bidder - more than likely you'll not be satisfied with the results.

Ask the painter to see other 'jobs' they have done on multi- stage paint. This will assist in determining your analysis of his/her capibilities.

Mike: this area is low on the car.. and it is a one pice glass in... which means it has edges.. you should just wind up painting the rocker... its the lowest part on the car... if you use stone guard clear coat as I suggested it will help with the blend ...here is a picture of what needs to be painted,,,

Thanks for all of the previous info Evil -Twin. Did they paint the whole rocker panel or did they just blend the vent area into the rest of the rocker panel? I've done some car painting myself in the past and have done pretty well with spot panel repair but most of that was with solid colors and clear coat. The only metallic I've done was on a silver met. C5 I had before this one and the engine compartment components on this mag red . Theyv'e all turned out well so I may try my hand on this as well. The worst thing is I'll just have to take it to a professional and have it redone. I'm hoping that since its along the bottom, any slight mismatch won't be noticable anyway but I'm kind of particular so if I can see any mismatch while I'm on my hands and knees, I'll have it redone. BTW, excellent glass job you did there on yours, Evil Twin

After having my 2000 Mag Red II coupe for 2 weeks (in 2003), someone keyed the passenger's door. It was a gash 10 inches long that went into the base coat. We tried buffing it out but it changed color when the scratch was finally out. I live in a fairly small town and even the GM dealer's body shop didn't seem qualified after talking to them. I tried talking to body shops in the area, and they seemed interested only in screwing Allstate and didn't have experience with MR.

I finally found a place in Tempe, AZ that had painted at least 3 vettes with MR and I trusted them to try it. They did a perfect job including matching the texture from the factory. (That is the tricky part). Unfortunately for Allstate, it cost $700 for one door!

I had to have a new headlamp door painted Mag Red II on my 2000. The GM dealer tried twice... then they took it to a custom paint shop. So, it took three times to get it right.

Default Me too!

Took a rock into the read quarter down near the bottom and left a 2 inch long 1/4 wide "gouge" into the glass. Dealer has quoted me $315 to repair using the same 4 step approach used from the factory. I too am apprehensive.

I have an '04 that I bought the end of January. About 2 months ago I turned a little to sharp getting in to the parking garage at work and hit the curb under the door, right in front of the rear wheel. It is far enough under that piece that you can't see the damage unless you are either laying under the car or about 10 feet away.

I finally took it in to City Chevrolet in Charlotte for an estimate two weeks ago. They said that even though there are seams there (except for where the door opens), Mag red is very difficult to paint and they would most probably need to blend it in to the door, rear quarter, and piece behind the front wheel. If they have to do that, it was going to be $1107.88. If by some chance they only had to do that piece without the blending it would be $601.38. I am very apprehensive about having them blend in to other pannels after seeing so many cars after a few years where the blending discolors and it looks terrible.

The big white scratches were very noticeable. I decided to just fill it in with two stage touch up paint. Now you can't see it at all unless you happen to be laying on the ground next to the car. I just can't believe they wanted that much to fix it.
