Can any of you guys that have been to the Corvette assembly plant tell me how many coats of clear paint goes on after the color coat? my car is Machine Silver if that should make a difference. What I want to do is color sand/cut & buff the paint out to minimize the orange peel if there is enough clear on the car. What I don't want to do is sand or buff through the clear coat. Although not as bad as my doctors SL500 it does have some orange peel.
What I was impressed with was the Quality of the fit and finish on this car, if far exceeded by expectations
I'm not sure but I hope they have enough. I have a headlamp door lid that hits the hood (made nice scratch on both) when up and will be taking it in for warranty next week. I won't allow touch up paint either so they need to do it right.
If there is significant orange peel in the color coat, I would think that buffing the clear would be a waste of time. But I'm far from an expert on paint.
Not worth the risk in my opinion. Nobody can tell you how thick the clear on your car is until you sand through and it is too late. Black can sometimes look like hell with all the orange peel, but silver shined up with decent wax should be hardly noticeable. Show car painters will put on many color coats real thick, color sand and buff, multiple layers of real thick clear, sand and buff - all within a couple days before the paint cures hard (the window). A production car that is beyond that window and is fully cured is going to have an extremely thin rock hard clear coat. Can that be sanded and buffed to perfection? Maybe.
Wax on, Wax off, drive, smile.
A mil. gauge will tell you exactly how much paint is on your car. Less is better, believe it or not. Have a experienced painter scuff with no coarser than 2000 grit paper, wet, then polish and glaze to desired gloss. The days of 20 coat lacquer jobs are gone, thank goodness.
