Been reading about some history of GM engines having severe carbon build-up in the cylinder chamber which in turn makes a knock sound similar to valve knock. Anyone have this noise and fix it through using top end cleaner from GM? I think my car has this problem. 97 A4 w/ 31k. Seems to be there through the powerband.
What octane gas do you use? I had a brain fart one time and put the 87 octane in mine. Pinged every time I got on it. The gas around here is 93. I'm sticking with that.
Go find an open stretch of highway and floor it. That will clean it out.
Flooring it will not clean out the carbon build up and if your car is pinging bad enough it could damage the valve train or valves. I had carbon build up and the only way to get rid of it completely is to do a "motor vac". This is a process were the car is hooked to a machine that runs a chemical through the engine while the car is running to clean the cylinders and fule system. Check and see if you can find a Vette tuner in your area that can do this for you. Cost is usually around 100 bucks but worth it.
