Hi guys- I'm new to forum (well Ive been lurking for a couple of weeks) and have a simple question. I just bought my first Vette (97 A4 ) and was wondering about its performance. It runs really strong but if I turn the traction control off and stomp on it from a dead stop it doesn't even spin the tires. I guess I was expecting a little more...like getting completely sideways!
O.K. no clutcher wise cracks.
I know its got alot of rubber on the ground but is something wrong?
Being a little more than exicted when I got it a couple of weeks ago, that was my first thought. But even with a little brake action I get nothing. I am no expert by any means but I grew up playing with cars and have done my fair share of power braking.
I was successful however when I stomped it and turned hard to the left. She had no problems slinging a few 360s once I broke her loose!
I promise I'm not that reckless...just excited to have some muscle again.
Most A4's wont spin the tires. Yours is most likely the dreaded 2.73 rear. Even the 3.15s don't spin that well. Don't let it bother you. Best money you can spend is for a set of 3.42s and a new converter..
Your car will drive like a new car and the tires will be toast if you want to play!!
Not sure about the vin numbers. I would bet your rpms would be closer to 2000 rpms at 75 mph with 2.73s.
You can find good 3.42s for around $500 used. A good convertor (3000-3500) is up to $900. Labor, including the limited slip gear fluid and other stuff can go around $600.
If I were starting over again, his is where my first bucks would go....
I'm not sure but does the torque management system have something to do with these A4's not being able to power stall very well? I had the torque management parameters zeroed out during my PCM reprogram and now I can light 'em up like crazy I have the 3.15's and I wasn't able to stand on the brakes and floor it without it bogging down before and yes, this was with the traction control off.
I have an A4 with 2.73's. For me it feels good knowing that I can punch it at any speed and not lose the rear. I do wish I had a little more pickup off the line but to me it's a fair trade off,

yeah, but remember, tires back in the sixties were NOTHING compared to todays tires.
Put a set of 275 r15 265's OEM Redlines on a C5, and you'd be able to melt it off the rims. In second. (opps-- forgot-- you have an auto....) :-)
I was in the same boat as u a few months ago. After lots of research I changed out to a 3.42 rear on my 99 A4 vert. Lots more power now and chirps when shifting from 1st to 2nd which is nice. I didn't change the torque converter though and I wished I had. Tires squeak slightly off the line now where before it did nothing (like yours is). If I'd changed the TC I'm sure it would be burning it up off the line.
To check on your gear (which has to be a 2.73 vs 3.15 for an A4) you can e-mail the chevy dealer you bought it from or use the GM website which allows u to enter your VIN and display the data for your car.
I, like you, was a bit dissapointed about the lack of punch off the line. Guess that gives us a nice impetus for modding! BTW, when I raced a Z28 with my 2.73 diff and stock motor, all I could do was keep even with him until after about 60mph, then I started to pull away slowly. Embarassing! Now things are a little better. I just need a good tune which is coming soon to help with my performance. Soon to come, a blower
