I'm showing my friend my 04 today and he notices a cut in the rear right fender top. Egad!! it's about 1 inch long and down to the primer. I have absolutely NO Idea how it happened, I park plenty far away and I'm super careful. Any way the dealer says " we can fix it for $200-$300 but the body shop guy says to just use touch up paint. I have some experience with paints so my plan is to use 3M fineline tape and tape off the cut. Then build up layers of paint using the touch up until its level. Then rub it out and wax. I think that will look ok.. not perfect but ok. Any other ideas I should consider? thanks in advance, and this is a Great Forum!
Sounds like a plan to me. By the way. There is a product (a liquid) that you can rub over "fresh" touch-up paint that will level it out down to the old paint without disturbing the old paint at all. Right now I just can't remember the name of it. I'm sure someone else will jump in shortly with the name of the product. Good luck !
P.S.
I found it. Its called Langka. Just go to search & type in paint touch-up.

You are probably thinking of Langka. Mother's also makes a paint chip repair kit that works the same way and is available at Pepboys or Autozone.

Thanks, I haven't heard of that product before. Sounds like I may have a use for it. I'll see how far I get with my method then I may get some of langka product if necessary. Thanks again!!!
I've tried it and didn't have much success. It seemed to dissolve the touchup paint too quickly. and either took off too much paint or left the surface rough. Maybe others have had better results. I wound up using the GM paint chip repair kit with better results. Duplicolor sells the same thing, probably for less. The kit contains clearcoat, a small foam sanding block, superfine adhesive backed sandpaper, and a polishing compound. Unless your working on a horizontal surface, it's difficult to keep the clearcoat from running. Also be very carful not to sand through the clear around the repaired area. It's thin. A little Zaino after, and it should look better than it was.
Greg, thanks for your experiences. I have worked with paints on other projects and because of that I have a lot of types of materials to use. This includes rubbing compounds and ultra fine sand papers (1000, 1500 and 2000 grades). I think using the 3M fine line tape to mask the cut and then filling it in with touch up paint via a very thin brush will work ok. After its filled I'll leave the tape on to level it and then remove the tape and rub it out. I'll try to take some before and after pictures if I'm successful.
