Default Problem w/shift **** removal

The metal pin holding the **** has snapped on each side leaving just a triangular shaped piece to try to get out. Not sure how I should approach this. The rectangle piece broke on each side from my wife prying on one side with a screw driver and me on the other side. Have used quite a bit of WD-40 and am wondering if this softened the pot metal piece. Does anyone have any ideas as to the best way to remove this pin now? Thanks,

Gene

Well you have tried the worst way to get it off, now try this ....vice grip the pin, then run a screw driver in between the pin and vice grip, hold handle of screw driver and hit upward on the other end of the screw driver.

I had a devil of a time getting that piece out of mine when I installed a new shifter. After breaking off the corner like you did, I finally drilled a 1/8" hole in it, put a screw into the hole and pryed it out using by grabbing the screw with a vice grips and tapping on them to get it out. That didn't destroy the piece, as I was able to put it back in while I wait for the new shift **** to show up.

Ohhh, that brings back bad memories for me. I tried for over three hours to get the pin out with no luck. I tried every method possible, except drilling the hole in it, and nothing worked. I ended up taking a hack saw and cutting the stock shifter in two, which took about five minutes. I had originally planned on using the stock **** with my Hurst that I was installing, but since I couldn't get the **** off, I ended up ordering a MOMO **** to go with the Hurst. I'm glad I did because it's a great combonation.

Clamp a pair of vice grips down on the pin, then tap up gently on the side of the grips - the pin should pop out.

The "Demon Key" is a huge PITA to get out. I used both the vice grips and the screwdriver methods, and it took me 1/2 to get it out.

Thanks to all, for your help. Used the vice-grips and screwdriver/hammer method tonight and the pin finally came out. It was still a PITA as it took me about 15 minutes to remove the pin using this method. This beats trying to pry the pin out. Again, my thanks to all for the help.

Drill a hole through it and screw a screw into it. Clamp onto the screw with vice grips and place a screw driver into the crotch of the vice grips. Tap with hammer on the screw driver keeping the screw driver parallel the the ground. Works fo me on two cars.

Just put my Hurst in a few days ago and was dreading the the evil and infamous "Demon Key"....I opted for the two screwdriver method and it gently came out with medium effort. No stress, no fuss...infact I was able to slow down when I could see it was nearly out then pluck it out with my fingers. The dreaded demon key took all of about 3 seconds to extract.

It was much tighter going into the Hurst though...so I am once again dreading the extraction when the new **** arrives.

Good tips...thanks for sharing
