I brought my 97 torch red coupe home the other day. the car fax was squeaky clean and the car looked pretty cherry sitting in the showroom. I'm only now noticing that the hood in different lighting conditions (ie. my garage) looks a bit lighter in color than the other panels. The car doesn't appear to have any paint work though (i'm fairly good at finding body / paint work). Is the hood a different material than the front fenders ?? Does anyone see the same thing on their red vette ?? I could be seeing things but still i'm a little dismayed, please help...
Also, i''m looking for a torch red front plate filler if anyone has one to sell.

Every vette has this small insignificant problem with some worse than others. TRed, MIl Yellow, Blues It is different materials from fenders to hoods to doors etc... robotic painting puts extremely thin coats so the tints will vary. Most who have this problem just have the car color sanded lightly to match the paint.
With all due respect,, you can wipe your butt with a car fax... Mine came back with a clean car fax.. You will only get pissed when/if you find the truth...
Auto Checker showed it was in an accident..
I feel dealers use Car Fax KNOWING it is garbage!!
I parked my 2000 out in the middle of no where while I was at lunch with a friend. As I ate in the restaurant this idiot in a piece of work Corolla backs into the nose ..... I wont go into this .... He just scraped the paint, if there is a thing as "just" with my baby . anyway I took it in for repairs. They(collision people) told me they would just put color in the center of the front bumper and then clear coat the entire bumper to blend it together. I noticed the other day that in sunlight especially it looks darker then the rest of the vette. I returned and complained. They explained that they used PPG paints and that they had to put an additive into the paint to get the clear coat to flex with the bumper and that was what was making it darker. Hmmm wonder how Chevy did it at the factory? The rear bumper matches .. Anyway they offered to repaint the entire front end to make it match? I dont want more paint ...ugh!! Suggestions???
My shop runs into this all the time with Torch Red. There are two color variants for the paint. One being lighter and more orange and the other darker and more red. The shop just needs to figure out your variant and paint appropriately. The easiest way to match is to shoot the panel with a paint camera. On a side note, we've had more problems getting PPG paints to match than any other.
Also I wouldn't expect the repair shop to be able to "burn in" a spot in the center of your bumper, reclear and you not be able to tell a difference. Unless they are extremely skilled, they should just reshoot the bumper and clear. That way you are guaranteed a match as long as the right variant is used.

Interesting. My 99 is more the orange color. I was parked next to another TR vert. (newer year) and noticed his car appeared to be a different shade of red. Guess thats why.

Take to to an authorized GM dealer with a body shop. Those people do an excellent job of matching paint. It may cost a little more, but when the final result is rolled out the door, it is a much better job. I have been on your page before. I learned the hard way. It is my experience that insurance people and private auto shops are in bed with other. Therefore, they like to screw you around. A qualified Chevy Auto body shop should be able to help you out. Good luck.
My '99 TR coupe looks consistent in color all around. I looked at it in several different light situations and could not tell the difference from the hood to the side panels. Check your car in different lights...sometimes the difference may be in the lighting changes.
Mine was involved in an accident, after changing the broken pieces, I decided to pay extra to have the whole car re-painted instead of a blend (glad I did) even with that being done, upon inspections, I noticed difference in panels
They kept re-painting, so now I have a consistent color...with alot of clearcoat. Even now, depending on the light, I still see a variance in the top compared to the sides (depends on the light)...but it sure is shiney and hardly any orangepeel...plus the TR color used didn't really match the stock TR to a tee. So I'm happy now
Mine is consistent all over, no matter the lighting. I have noticed the orange/red variant in the Torch on others when I've parked next to another and compared...
2004TorchRed - That is a cool pic with all the different shading and lighting! Looks great.
